her too.”

Sarah wiped her face.

Thomas moved toward us.

Rebecca’s voice hardened.

“Not Thomas.”

He stopped.

“Rebecca.”

“No.”

“I can help.”

“You’ve helped enough.”

The call ended.

Thomas stood alone beside the table.

For once, nobody comforted him.

An hour later Sarah and I were in another federal vehicle with Daniel and Morales.

Emma remained with Eve, Maya, Lily, Ethan, Sophie, and Dr. Patel.

Before I left, Emma hugged me.

“Is she alive?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want her to be?”

I could not answer.

Emma understood.

“That’s okay.”

Children had become better at uncertainty than the adults around them.

The storage facility appeared beyond the windshield shortly after sunset.

A low white building behind landscaped hedges.

Across the street stood a young woman in a dark jacket.

Rebecca.

Daniel saw her.

His hand moved toward the door.

Then stopped.

He waited.

She crossed the street herself.

When Daniel stepped out, they stared at each other.

Brother and sister.

Strangers.

Rebecca looked at me next.

Then Sarah.

“You both have her eyes.”

Sarah’s mouth trembled.

“Where is she?”

Rebecca turned toward the building.

“Below us.”

“Can we get in?”

“Yes.”

“Can we get her out?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“That depends on what you mean by her.”

<a
