failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the old dread return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the baby survive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is this person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morales lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patient disappeared from follow-up twelve years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Another life.<\/p>\n<p>Another person carrying something taken from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we know a name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Morales said it.<\/p>\n<p>The surname made Sarah turn before I repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>Because we both knew it.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Not Daniel\u2019s adopted family by coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>The patient had been registered under Thomas Bennett\u2019s guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Thomas across the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>He saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>And immediately knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the Oregon baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders sank.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since meeting him, he seemed unable to decide whether truth was something he could survive.<\/p>\n<p>I held my mother\u2019s notebook against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more
