She asked whether Lily could stay with Emma and me until Sunday evening. She and Mark had something they needed to handle out of town, she said. Their nine-year-old son, Ethan, was supposedly away at a robotics camp in Colorado Springs, so it seemed like a good weekend to take care of whatever vague adult business had suddenly appeared on their calendar.

I almost asked what kind of business required both parents to disappear with less than a day’s notice. Then Lily came onto the call, asking whether Emma still had the inflatable flamingo we had bought last summer, and the question slipped away.

Sarah and I had never been identical kinds of sisters. She planned. I improvised. She kept color-coded calendars and packed lunches the night before. I had once driven Emma halfway to school before realizing it was Saturday. Sarah teased me about that story whenever she wanted to establish which of us was the responsible one.

That was why I noticed her instructions.

No swimming.

No rough games.

Make sure Lily showered by herself.

And, most strangely, do not let her take off the large adhesive bandage beneath the back of her left shoulder.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Nothing serious.”

“What does that mean?”

“A dermatology thing.”

Sarah answered too quickly, but I had frozen chicken thawing on the counter, Emma asking for cereal, and three grocery bags cutting circulation from my fingers.

I let it go.

Lily arrived after dinner carrying a pink backpack and wearing a sweatshirt despite the warm evening. Mark stayed behind the wheel. Sarah walked her to my porch, kissed her forehead, and gave me a smile that looked assembled rather than felt.

“You okay?” I asked.

“Long week.”

She glanced toward Mark’s SUV.

He was watching us.

Sarah lowered her voice. “Just keep things quiet this weekend.”

“Quiet is not really Emma’s specialty.”

Normally that would have made her smile.

It did not.

Instead she hugged Lily again. For a second, she held on so tightly that Lily’s face disappeared against her blouse.

Then Sarah whispered something into her daughter’s hair.

I could not hear it.

Lily nodded.

When Sarah finally released her, her eyes were wet.

“Call me if anything happens,” she said.

“What exactly is going to happen?”

“Nothing.”

That word stayed with me after she left.

Nothing.

People rarely say nothing that firmly unless they are afraid of something.

Still, Friday night passed normally. The girls ate popcorn, built a blanket fort across my living room, argued over which movie to watch, and fell asleep long after the time I had announced as nonnegotiable.

Only Lily seemed different.

She was quieter than usual. She startled when the microwave beeped. When I reached over to pull the hood of her sweatshirt away from her face, she jerked backward so sharply that I apologized.

“It’s okay,” she said immediately.

Too immediately.

Saturday morning, Emma proposed the community pool.

I remembered Sarah’s prohibition.

“No swimming.”

Emma groaned. “Why?”

“Because Aunt Sarah said so.”

“That’s not a reason.”

“It becomes one when I’m the adult paying the electricity bill.”

Lily sat at the kitchen island eating half a pancake. Her fork stopped moving.

I saw it.

“Would swimming hurt you?” I asked.

Her eyes rose to mine.

“No.”

“Your mom said you had something done to your skin.”

Lily looked down.

“It’s okay.”

“What did you have done?”

“I don’t remember.”

That answer bothered me.

Six-year-olds forget appointments. They forget names. They forget where they put their shoes while wearing them.

They do not usually forget why someone put a large medical dressing on their body.

I crouched beside her. “Does your shoulder hurt?”

She shook her head.

“Can I look?”

Her entire body tightened.

“No.”

The answer was barely audible.

I straightened immediately.

“All right. I won’t.”

Her shoulders relaxed.

That should have ended it.

Instead, an hour later Sarah texted me.

Hope everything is normal.

Not Hope the girls are having fun.

Not How is Lily?

Normal.

I typed back that everything was fine.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally Sarah wrote: Please keep her close to you.

I stared at the message.

Then I called.

She did not answer.

By lunchtime Emma had transformed the pool request into a campaign. She promised no diving, no splashing strangers, no running, and no asking me to buy the overpriced pretzels from the concession stand.

Lily listened from the couch.

Then she surprised me.

“I want to go.”

I studied her.

“You don’t have to.”

“I want to.”

“Your mom specifically said no swimming.”

“I can just sit.”

There was something in her expression that made refusal feel wrong. She had spent the entire morning looking as though invisible rules surrounded her. Maybe sitting beside a pool while her cousin acted ridiculous was exactly what she needed.

“Fine,” I said. “You can come. But you don’t get in unless I know that bandage can get wet.”

Lily nodded.

The community pool was crowded with Saturday families. Chlorine hung in the humid air. Children shrieked beneath the echoing roof. Lifeguard whistles cut through the noise every few minutes.

For the first time since she arrived, Lily looked almost relaxed.

Emma cannonballed into the shallow end and surfaced laughing.

Lily laughed too.

I watched her carefully.

Eventually she sat at the edge and dipped her feet into the water.

Nothing happened.

Twenty minutes later she asked whether she could swim.

I hesitated.

“The bandage?”

“It’s waterproof.”

“You’re sure?”

She nodded.

Sarah had not answered my call.

Against my better judgment, I let Lily change.

The girls spent nearly an hour in the shallow pool. Lily stayed close to Emma. She never complained of pain. She swam normally. She even beat Emma in a race from one wall to the floating lane divider, which produced a ten-minute argument over whether touching the rope counted as finishing.

It was ordinary.

That was what frightened me later.

Nothing sinister announced itself.

No stranger followed us.

No warning alarm sounded.

The terrible thing was already there, hidden beneath a child’s swimsuit.

We were getting ready to leave when Emma and Lily went into the family locker room with me. I was stuffing wet towels into a canvas bag when Emma suddenly stopped talking.

Silence from my daughter is unusual enough to deserve investigation.

I turned.

Emma was staring at Lily.

Lily had pulled her swimsuit strap aside while reaching for her shirt.

The bandage Sarah mentioned was no longer completely covered.

Emma moved closer.

“Mom.”

Her voice sounded wrong.

“Give Lily some space.”

“No. Mom, look.”

Lily grabbed for the strap.

Too late.

I had seen it.

Not the bandage.

What was underneath its edge.

A line of dark sutures.

Fresh ones.

I put the towel down.

“Lily.”

She backed against the locker.

“It’s okay.”

Those same two words.

The words she used whenever something clearly was not okay.

I kept my voice gentle. “Did the dermatologist put stitches there?”

She nodded.

“When?”

Silence.

“Yesterday?”

Her face changed.

That was enough.

I stepped closer without touching her. The dressing was lifting at one corner after an hour in the pool. Beneath it, the skin was red and swollen.

This was not a scraped mole.

This was an incision.

Several inches long.

Emma whispered, “Why would they cut her?”

Lily’s eyes filled.

I reached for my phone.

“Who are you calling?” she asked.

“Your mom.”

“No.”

The word came out so sharply that Emma jumped.

I stopped.

Lily was terrified.

Not nervous about getting in trouble for swimming.

Terrified.

“Why not?”

“Please don’t.”

“What happened to your back?”

“I can’t say.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the locker-room entrance as if someone might be standing there.

Then she whispered, “Because Daddy said everything gets worse if I talk.”

The room seemed to contract around us.

I crouched until my face was level with hers.

“What gets worse?”

Lily shook her head.

My phone vibrated in my hand.

SARAH.

I looked at Lily.

Her face drained of color.

I answered.

“Sarah.”

My sister did not say hello.

“Where are you?”

“At the pool.”

Silence.

Then a sharp breath.

“You took her swimming?”

“She wanted to go.”

“I told you not to.”

“Why does Lily have fresh stitches in her back?”

The line went completely quiet.

“Sarah?”

Nothing.

I stepped farther from the girls.

“What happened to her?”

Sarah finally spoke.

“Claire, listen carefully.”

The tone of her voice changed everything.

“What?”

“Do not take her anywhere.”

I looked at the incision.

“She needs a doctor.”

“No.”

“Sarah, that wound is red.”

“Bring her home.”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me what happened first.”

“I can’t.”

“Then I’m taking her to Children’s.”

“No!”

Her shout echoed through my phone.

Emma stared at me.

Lily began shaking.

I lowered my voice. “Why not?”

Sarah was breathing hard.

Then I heard another voice behind her.

Mark.

I could not make out the words.

Sarah answered him sharply, away from the phone.

Something bumped.

Then Mark’s voice came closer.

“Claire.”

I had never heard him sound like that.

Controlled.

Cold.

“Bring Lily home.”

“What happened to her?”

“It was a minor procedure.”

“For what?”

“That’s private.”

“She’s six.”

“She is our daughter.”

“And she is standing in front of me with a surgical wound you both apparently want hidden.”

“Claire.”

“No. Tell me what happened.”

Lily suddenly grabbed my wrist.

Her fingers were freezing.

“Aunt Claire.”

I looked down.

She whispered, “Please don’t take me back.”

Whatever uncertainty remained disappeared.

I picked up the wet towels.

“Girls, get dressed.”

Mark was still speaking.

“Claire, do not make this into something it isn’t.”

I ended the call.

Thirty seconds later Sarah texted.

Turn around.
