farewell.

The oversized sweatshirt.

The instructions.

The desperate hug.

She had not asked me to babysit Lily.

She had smuggled a different child out of more.”

The room became very quiet.

“How many more?”

The child could not say.

She had seen several children in underground rooms.

Some looked like her.

Others resembled different children who came to the facility.

I felt sick.

This was no longer about one desperate family.

Creston had created or altered multiple children to resemble others.

Before we could understand how, Morales received an update.

Police had reached one Creston location.

Most equipment was gone.

The patient database had been erased minutes before officers entered.

Someone had warned them.

Someone with access to police movements.

Possibly hospital systems too.

Sarah was being transported under protection with the girl she had found.

But Lily was still missing.

The unknown child grabbed my sleeve.

“Don’t be mad at Mommy.”

I looked at her.

“She tried.”

“I know.”

“She said she was sorry.”

“For what?”

The child swallowed.

“For choosing Ethan first.”

That sentence removed the last easy version of Sarah from my mind.

She was neither innocent nor monster.

She had been frightened.

Manipulated.

Complicit.

Then horrified by what her choices had enabled.

The hospital moved us to a secured floor.

Halfway there, the child stopped walking.

A woman in scrubs stood near an elevator.

The girl stared at her shoes.

Then whispered, “Not nurse.”

Security reacted immediately.

The woman ran.

Officers caught her before she reached the stairs.

Inside her pocket they found an electronic device keyed to the same frequency as the implant beneath the child’s skin.

Someone from Creston had entered the hospital.

Morales ordered everyone moved again.

My phone rang during the confusion.

Sarah.

She had reached the original Creston building with police.

Her voice was calmer now.

Too an alarm sounded inside the hospital.

Someone had attempted to access the child’s medical record from inside the building.

Dr. Patel’s imaging monitor flickered.

The implant beneath the child’s shoulder illuminated.

A tiny point of light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then every monitor in the room went black.

The overhead speaker crackled.

A man’s voice filled the pediatric wing.

The same voice that had called me on the road.

“Mrs.
