Maybe not intending the stitches to be exposed there.<\/p>\n<p>But she had expected me to discover something.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>She called again.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him too.<\/p>\n<p>Emma shifted beside Lily. \u201cAre we still getting snacks at the hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under different circumstances, I might have laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily did not smile.<\/p>\n<p>Another call appeared.<\/p>\n<p>UNKNOWN.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly let it ring out.<\/p>\n<p>Then I answered through the car speakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breathing.<\/p>\n<p>A man finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Bennett?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you currently transporting Lily Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in a calm voice, he ordered me to turn the vehicle around and return the child to her parents.<\/p>\n<p>The call ended before I could respond.<\/p>\n<p>Emma asked who it was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked into the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Lily had gone white.<\/p>\n<p>She knew the voice.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled into a crowded pharmacy parking lot and stopped directly beneath a security camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma, headphones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She obeyed.<\/p>\n<p>Once her purple headphones were over her ears, I climbed into the back seat beside Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recognized him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou answered too fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>I softened my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to protect adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her chin trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to keep a secret because somebody scared you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One tear slid down her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd whatever happened to your back, nobody is punishing you for telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That broke whatever she had been holding together.<\/p>\n<p>She folded against me and cried so quietly that I felt each breath against my shirt.<\/p>\n<p>After a while she whispered, \u201cMommy said I had to be brave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she take you somewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor\u2019s office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked like one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas your father there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears spilled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say would happen if you told?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came so softly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy would go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he go away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you awake during whatever happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than almost anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey gave you medicine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you woke up, was your mom there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily squeezed her eyes shut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat worked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached behind herself and touched the dressing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctor said I was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>I climbed into the front seat again.<\/p>\n<p>A voicemail from Sarah waited on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>I played it quietly.<\/p>\n<p>My sister begged me not to take Lily to Children\u2019s Hospital. She promised she could explain if I brought Lily back.<\/p>\n<p>What she did not say mattered more.<\/p>\n<p>She did not tell me the incision was harmless.<\/p>\n<p>She did not name the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>She did not tell me which doctor performed it.<\/p>\n<p>She only wanted to keep Lily away from a legitimate hospital.<\/p>\n<p>I called 911.<\/p>\n<p>The dispatcher listened without interrupting as I described the fresh incision, the sedation, the unknown facility, Sarah\u2019s refusal to explain, and the anonymous caller.<\/p>\n<p>Her tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not return the child to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContinue to the hospital. Officers will meet you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked whether Lily\u2019s parents could see my location.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah and I had shared locations for years.<\/p>\n<p>I disabled mine.<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s black SUV appeared two cars behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Lily saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah sat beside him, crying.<\/p>\n<p>She pressed her palms together through the window, begging me to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Mark cut across my lane.<\/p>\n<p>I slammed the brakes.<\/p>\n<p>Emma screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stopped diagonally ahead of us, jumped out, and came toward my driver\u2019s window.<\/p>\n<p>I locked every door.<\/p>\n<p>He struck the glass with his palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily dropped to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>She covered her head with both arms.<\/p>\n<p>That reaction told me more about Mark than anything he could have said.<\/p>\n<p>I called 911 again.<\/p>\n<p>When Mark realized police were coming, he stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stood behind him.<\/p>\n<p>For one brief second our eyes met.<\/p>\n<p>She mouthed two words.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t trust him.<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned back to me and said Sarah had been unstable lately.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Sarah flinch.<\/p>\n<p>Not emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>Physically.<\/p>\n<p>The same small recoil I had seen from Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat procedure did Lily have?\u201d I asked through a narrow opening in the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreventative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat cancer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark told her to stop.<\/p>\n<p>I asked again.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked straight at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police sirens arrived before she could explain.<\/p>\n<p>Mark and Sarah were separated. Officers spoke to each of us while an ambulance checked Lily.<\/p>\n<p>I insisted we continue to Children\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Mark objected.<\/p>\n<p>The officer ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>At the emergency department, a pediatric physician named Dr. Patel examined the wound. Her expression remained professional, but I saw concern settle into it as soon as she removed the dressing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not dermatology,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need imaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incision is deeper than I would expect for a superficial procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily clung to my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Emma sat nearby with a coloring book someone had found.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Elena Morales arrived while Lily was being scanned. She asked careful questions without pushing Lily beyond what she could answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Morales told me to put it on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>My sister\u2019s first question was whether Mark was with us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, tell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t explain on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I don\u2019t know who can hear me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to Lily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cI thought I was saving Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>Her nine-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>The boy supposedly attending robotics camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Ethan have to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow sick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found something six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept that from everyone for six months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the doorway at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do to your daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was testing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat testing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what they did after they took her in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wouldn\u2019t let me stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wouldn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A door sounded on Sarah\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing quickened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cHe found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Morales was already moving.<\/p>\n<p>Police tried locating Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone could tell me whether they had succeeded, Dr. Patel returned.<\/p>\n<p>She had Lily\u2019s scan.<\/p>\n<p>There was something beneath the skin.<\/p>\n<p>A small rectangular device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA tracker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t look like an ordinary tracking device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Patel enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow filament extended from the device into deeper tissue.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach rolled.<\/p>\n<p>Then a technician entered carrying blood tubes.<\/p>\n<p>Lily panicked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo needles!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman stopped immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Lily clutched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean, more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Patel crouched beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many tubes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily spread her hands apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer landed with awful simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they tell you?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Lily repeated words someone had drilled into her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy blood helps Ethan. My body helps Ethan.
