That generally helps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant moved closer to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho talked you into this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody needed him to say my name.<\/p>\n<p>Dad understood anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy attorney advised me. My doctor evaluated me. I signed the documents myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went to a doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted there to be no argument later about whether I understood what I was signing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced Grant for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had anticipated the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>So had his lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa recovered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho controls the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s eyes moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a knot form beneath my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>He had not explained the documents we signed the day before. I had sat beside him at the attorney&#39;s office, witnessed signatures, answered questions, and signed where I was told. Dad had said we would discuss everything after he felt safe.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently that conversation had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI control it while I&#39;m competent,\u201d he said. \u201cIf that changes, the successor trustee takes over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe child I trust to answer when I call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa&#39;s expression collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad didn&#39;t respond.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t need to.<\/p>\n<p>Grant slammed the papers onto the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hasn&#39;t lived here in nine years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re the ones who stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stayed near my property,\u201d Dad said. \u201cThat&#39;s not the same as staying near me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Cruel was watching Natalie pay my property tax while you told everyone she had abandoned the family. Cruel was promising to fix my furnace, then leaving me without heat until she paid for a replacement from eleven hours away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I had surgery, Natalie slept in a chair beside my hospital bed. Bills. Statements. Passwords. Vanessa offered to help. Grant started coming around more often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you thought they were helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to think they were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence carried more pain than anger.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had spent most of his life believing family loyalty was something permanent. He could argue with his children, disapprove of them, even stop speaking to them temporarily, but betrayal was a word he reserved for strangers.<\/p>\n<p>Now his own children were standing inside his office searching for documents while believing him dead.<\/p>\n<p>I reached across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the sheriff tell you to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocument everything. Don&#39;t confront them alone. Secure my accounts. Replace the estate documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd leave town?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when I called and said I needed help, you didn&#39;t ask whether it was convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>On the laptop, Grant had begun speaking into Vanessa&#39;s ear.<\/p>\n<p>Dad unmuted the call.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa&#39;s voice immediately became gentle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, we&#39;re sorry. Harold told us you were gone. We panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople usually panic away from a dead man&#39;s bank statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant swore.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we just talk in person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I don&#39;t want either of you near me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have keys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose keys don&#39;t make it yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave me one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor emergencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought this was an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought I was dead. Dead people don&#39;t need you rummaging through their offices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant suddenly spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Harold. He told us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold called me at five this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa froze.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me you had contacted his old funeral home yesterday asking how quickly a death certificate could be produced if someone died at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad watched both reactions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave them my full legal name,\u201d he said. \u201cMy birth date. My Social Security number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa&#39;s mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was asking hypothetically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout my death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve had health problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo have millions of people. Their children don&#39;t prearrange paperwork without telling them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant snatched the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is getting ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Dad said. \u201cIt got ridiculous when somebody tried stealing thirty-eight thousand dollars using a revoked power of attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence that followed was different.<\/p>\n<p>Before, Vanessa had sounded defensive.<\/p>\n<p>Now she sounded afraid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know anything about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Then you won&#39;t mind investigators checking your computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant shouted, \u201cInvestigators?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa hissed at him to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Dad muted the call again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expected that reaction?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hoped I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked suddenly exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I wasn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the security screen, Vanessa and Grant began moving quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Grant pulled open every remaining drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa searched the bookcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re looking for something,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant crossed behind the desk.<\/p>\n<p>A framed photograph of Mom hung on the wall there.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted it down.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a small safe.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know you had that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Grant entered four digits.<\/p>\n<p>The lock opened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does he know the combination?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa knelt beside Grant.<\/p>\n<p>He removed a thick brown envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe will,\u201d Vanessa said.<\/p>\n<p>She tore it open.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned closer to the screen.<\/p>\n<p>They read several pages.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa&#39;s face brightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere,\u201d she said. \u201cThe house, truck, accounts. It says Grant and I inherit everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;re fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s an old draft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother and I were reviewing estate options. We never signed that version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the screen Vanessa turned to the final page.<\/p>\n<p>Her smile vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant grabbed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere&#39;s the executed copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They emptied the safe.<\/p>\n<p>Old insurance policies.<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s jewelry case.<\/p>\n<p>Several property documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vanessa reached into the back and removed a narrow red folder.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped so abruptly that his chair overturned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>She read the first page.<\/p>\n<p>Every trace of irritation disappeared from her face.<\/p>\n<p>Grant leaned over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He took the page.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed too.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my heartbeat against my throat.<\/p>\n<p>Grant read the document again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me this was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Frank finds this\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>Grant folded the paper and pushed it inside his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa shoved the remaining contents back into the safe.<\/p>\n<p>Dad reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are they talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou reacted when you saw the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it wasn&#39;t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the laptop Grant replaced Mom&#39;s photograph over the safe.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something that stripped the color from Dad&#39;s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to destroy this before Natalie learns what actually happened the night Eleanor died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Three years had passed since we buried her.<\/p>\n<p>Three years since Vanessa told me she had suffered a sudden heart attack alone in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>He caught the edge of the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he mean?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Before Dad could answer, Grant looked directly toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>His hand reached upward.<\/p>\n<p>The security feed disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>One screen blackened.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Within seconds every view of Dad&#39;s house was gone.<\/p>\n<p>But Grant&#39;s last sentence remained in the kitchen long after the screens went dark.<\/p>\n<p>Something had happened the night Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa and Grant knew what it was.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever proof had survived for three years was now inside Grant&#39;s jacket.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11128\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Red Folder Reopened the Night We Buried Mom, and Her Own Voice Revealed Who Had Refused to Save Her<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vanessa did not move.
