Anyone whose records could be verified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel returned the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great deal of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout six million now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStephen knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows something remained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Harbor Point\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believes that money belongs to the Voss family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt tired suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>Not frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a trust controlled by DNH Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That meant controlled by me.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this isn\u2019t about nine million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t even about Hale Urban Design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot originally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine whispered, \u201cStephen wants the reserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from somewhere outside the office.<\/p>\n<p>Metal striking concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you lock the door?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She moved toward the glass wall.<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse appeared empty.<\/p>\n<p>Then the lights went out.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus grabbed his phone and turned on the flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once, listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before he could argue, headlights flashed through the high windows.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle had entered the loading area.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked toward the back exit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A voice echoed through the warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine froze.<\/p>\n<p>His footsteps moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>He called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have answered your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline whispered, \u201cHe must have tracked the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus moved between us and the office door.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen appeared at the edge of the flashlight beam.<\/p>\n<p>He was alone.<\/p>\n<p>At least, he looked alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did not.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s gaze shifted to the certificate in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>His entire expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held the ledger tighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora, you don\u2019t understand what that book contains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you plan for me to meet Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI introduced two people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used my marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI protected this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s composure finally broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline stepped out from behind Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Stephen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father stole from people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father built half of what Daniel took.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he should not have stolen from the other half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always admired Daniel more than your own family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI admired that he took responsibility for what he could fix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Daniel was generous? He kept control of everything. He decided who deserved repayment. He decided my father\u2019s punishment. He decided what Marcus got. He decided what Nora knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe played judge for twenty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not entirely disagree.<\/p>\n<p>That was the terrible part.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had done good things through secrecy and control.<\/p>\n<p>He had also left everyone else to live inside consequences they did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen reached into his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine gasped.<\/p>\n<p>But he did not pull a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled a folded document.<\/p>\n<p>He threw it onto the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>It was a copy of a trust amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s signature appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>The reserve fund was not permanently dedicated to claimants.<\/p>\n<p>After twenty years, any unclaimed remainder could revert to the descendants of the original Grant Street partners.<\/p>\n<p>Including Arthur Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning half of what remains is legally ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly after verified liabilities are satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix million dollars is sitting in a trust your husband had no right to keep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the amendment.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since entering the warehouse, Stephen was not asking me to believe a story.<\/p>\n<p>He had shown me a document.<\/p>\n<p>And if it was real, the truth was more complicated than Daniel\u2019s ledger suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone could speak again, sirens sounded outside.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>I was not.<\/p>\n<p>I had texted Thomas from the car before entering.<\/p>\n<p>If we did not call him within forty-five minutes, he was to contact police.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen heard them.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Then he laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel taught you well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe taught me what happens when people keep too much to themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police lights flashed red and blue across the warehouse windows.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked at the ledger one last time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can lock me out of the company.
