And the person who delivered the invitation to your locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho delivered it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA federal courier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used federal personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone I trusted arranged it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed me the paper.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Agent Ortiz stood outside a restaurant with a man I recognized from the Everhart headquarters video.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Vale.<\/p>\n<p>The image was dated four months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t prove anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said he\u2019s connected to the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrtiz could have been investigating him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want me suspicious of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you suspicious of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then a red dot appeared on her chest.<\/p>\n<p>I saw it before she did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDown!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hit her hard.<\/p>\n<p>The porch window exploded behind us.<\/p>\n<p>We fell.<\/p>\n<p>A second shot tore through the wooden railing.<\/p>\n<p>My mother crawled toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I heard agents shouting from the tree line.<\/p>\n<p>Gunfire answered from somewhere beyond the field.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s voice came through my concealed earpiece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, stay down!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re wired?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another shot struck the porch post.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>Engines started in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s team moved.<\/p>\n<p>Harris reached us first.<\/p>\n<p>He dragged me behind the brick foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re Benjamin Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were Riverdale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that case?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI created the evidence trail your informant found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had never mentioned that.<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see whether anyone honest would follow it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou survived longer than expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression darkened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad I impressed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz approached with two agents.<\/p>\n<p>My mother looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, neither woman spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz said, \u201cElaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not Mrs. Morgan.<\/p>\n<p>Not ma\u2019am.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you\u2019d never met her,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just called her by name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother said quietly, \u201cShe\u2019s telling the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned on her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just showed me a photograph suggesting Ortiz is compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI showed you evidence that required explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what you people do. You never accuse.
