something.”

He was silent.

I turned.

“Dad.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“When we met in Lisbon, she gave me a phrase.”

“What phrase?”

“‘When Claire finally sees the second picture, send her home.’”

I frowned.

“What second picture?”

“I never knew.”

My phone vibrated.

A message from Ortiz.

She wanted me downstairs.

Federal technicians had finished examining the reproduction of my childhood fair photograph.

I left my father and joined Ortiz, Harris, Samuel, and Natalie in a secure conference room.

On the table lay an enlarged scan of the photograph.

Ortiz pointed toward the ferris wheel behind my father and me.

“At first we thought these were compression artifacts.”

She enlarged several tiny shapes between the spokes.

They formed letters.

Not enough to read normally.

But when the image was mirrored, a phrase appeared.

SECOND PICTURE — HIGGINS.

I stared.

“Mrs. Higgins?”

Harris was already reaching for his phone.

She did not answer.

Neither her mobile nor home phone.

Police were dispatched.

We drove there under escort.

Mrs. Higgins’s front door was unlocked.

Her house was empty.

No struggle.

No blood.

Her purse remained on the kitchen table.

Beside it sat an old photograph album.

Open.

A photograph had been removed.

Only four corner tabs remained.

On the facing page, Mrs. Higgins had written a date.

The day my mother died.

Underneath it were six words.

ELAINE SAID CLAIRE WOULD COME SOMEDAY.

I could barely speak.

“Mrs. Higgins knew my mother.”

Harris looked around the room.

“Apparently.”

“She’s lived beside me my whole life.”

Samuel had gone pale.

I turned toward him.

“You recognize her.”

He nodded slowly.

“Not as Higgins.”

“Then who?”

He looked at the empty photograph slot.

“Her name was Margaret Vale.”

Vale.

The surname of the armed man captured at Everhart headquarters.

My pulse quickened.

“Related to Marcus Vale?”

Samuel nodded.

“His mother.”

I stared toward Mrs. Higgins’s garden through the kitchen window.

The woman who had called police.

The woman who believed me when nobody else did.

The woman who had watched my house for years.

She had not been an accidental neighbor.

She had been placed beside me.

Harris found an envelope beneath the album.

CLAIRE.

Inside was a key.

Not a house key.

A brass station-locker key.

Attached was a handwritten note.

Your mother asked me to wait until you stopped trusting the dead.

No explanation.

Just a locker number.

217.

Ortiz identified the station from an old transit logo stamped on the key.

A railway terminal thirty minutes away.

We arrived after dark.

Locker 217 opened with one turn.

Inside was a red scarf.

My mother’s scarf.

I recognized it immediately.

She wore it constantly during my childhood.

Underneath lay a recent photograph.

My mother stood beside Mrs. Higgins.

Both older.

Both alive.

The date printed on the image was six weeks earlier.

Behind them was a café.

On the back my mother had written one sentence.

Claire, if you found this without Derek, you are finally ready to hear why I left.

Beneath it was tomorrow’s date.

And an address.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I
