Now my father is in old records recommending surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris closed the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich means your father\u2019s phone call may not have been a rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The truth of that was unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>The door rattled.<\/p>\n<p>Harris drew his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Three knocks.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man outside said, \u201cBen, it\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris froze.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard anyone call him Ben.<\/p>\n<p>He approached the door without opening it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>He asked through the door, \u201cWhat happened at Riverdale Station?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou broke your wrist chasing a witness over the east fence and told everyone you fell off your bike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris unlocked the door.<\/p>\n<p>A man in his sixties entered.<\/p>\n<p>Thin.<\/p>\n<p>White hair.<\/p>\n<p>Old scar beneath one eye.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire Morgan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was Harris\u2019s informant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accident was arranged. I survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere have you been?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHiding badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat appears to be a family tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich version?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one before he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he part of Everhart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he criminal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word landed harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut,\u201d he continued, \u201che tried to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter they targeted you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you inherited something they needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached inside his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Harris immediately raised his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlowly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel removed an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>It showed my father standing in our backyard twenty years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him was the detached garage.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pointed to the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father hid records there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to destroy Everhart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe garage was demolished twelve years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe foundation was removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father had a second chamber beneath it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the garden.<\/p>\n<p>The patio.<\/p>\n<p>The area where Derek had insisted we never excavate because of drainage lines.<\/p>\n<p>Derek had known.<\/p>\n<p>All those years.<\/p>\n<p>He had married me.<\/p>\n<p>Moved into my house.<\/p>\n<p>Watched me.<\/p>\n<p>And underneath our backyard might have been the reason.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, your husband didn\u2019t choose you by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went completely silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe met you because of your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=11049\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Learned Derek Had Chosen Me Years Before We Met, and the Search Beneath My Garden Exposed What My Father Had Buried<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Detective Harris moved me before sunset.
