You were afraid Emily would replace the old family. anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the young woman standing where the angry sixteen-year-old once stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means what people repeatedly choose to do,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot what they\u2019re called?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The truth applied to him too.<\/p>\n<p>Husband.<\/p>\n<p>Mother.<\/p>\n<p>Daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>Those names could describe relationships.<\/p>\n<p>They could not make those relationships good.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, after Laura and Margaret were gone, Ava brought the letters upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel cleaned the coffee cups without being asked.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to sorting photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>There is one more thing you deserve to know.<\/p>\n<p>Attached was a photograph of a document dated shortly before Daniel and I married.<\/p>\n<p>I enlarged it.<\/p>\n<p>At first I did not understand what I was seeing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I read the heading.<\/p>\n<p>Property Transfer Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel came beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I scrolled lower.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared.<\/p>\n<p>So did his.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath them was Margaret\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>The house we had lived in for three years\u2014the house I had helped renovate, maintain and partly pay for\u2014had never been owned solely by Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Half of it had belonged to Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>And two months before our wedding, she had quietly transferred that half
