Laura remained outside beneath the porch light, damp hair clinging to her temples, one hand gripping the strap of a worn leather bag.<\/p>\n<p>For a long moment, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s voice came again, quieter this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever speech she had prepared disappeared from her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped aside without deciding to.<\/p>\n<p>Laura entered slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Rainwater darkened the mat beneath her shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel bent to pick up the screwdriver he had dropped, though he did not return to the cabinet. He placed it on the entry table with exaggerated care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d he asked again.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s eyes moved to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gave a short laugh without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava descended the remaining steps.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned toward her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>His anger did not disappear, but he contained it.<\/p>\n<p>Ava stopped several feet from Laura.<\/p>\n<p>She had seen photographs. She had spoken to her mother sporadically over the years. I thought being a wife and mother would make me feel settled. It had been careful, almost painfully respectful. I introduced myself. I told her I had no intention of taking her place. I said I wanted Ava to feel safe loving both of us in whatever ways were possible.<\/p>\n<p>Laura never answered.<\/p>\n<p>Later, during particularly difficult periods with Ava, I wrote three additional letters.<\/p>\n<p>I never mailed them.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had offered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where Laura is,\u201d she had said. \u201cLet me try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed the letters disappeared into silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou received them?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one before your wedding. The others over the next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do with them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever tell Ava what they said?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>Laura opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found them last week while clearing an old storage box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She extended the papers toward Ava.<\/p>\n<p>Ava hesitated before taking them.<\/p>\n<p>The top page was yellowed slightly at the fold.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized my handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>She began reading.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved slowly across the first page.<\/p>\n<p>Then the second.<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told her you\u2019d never ask me to call you Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She returned to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you\u2019d keep pictures of her in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she could come to my games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Laura.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>The silence became unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel finally asked the question sitting inside all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell Ava after receiving those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Emily wanted to erase me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava dropped the letter onto the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura began to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Ava shouted over her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sound cut through the house.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard Ava angry dozens of times.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard her devastated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if you liked her,\u201d Laura whispered, \u201cI was afraid you wouldn\u2019t need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava stared at her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Then she laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>A broken, unbelieving sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI one who was actually here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s shoulders shook.<\/p>\n<p>Ava looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I did not know what expression was on my face.<\/p>\n<p>I only knew I could not pretend this was easy to hear.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had taken my kindness and transformed it into evidence against me.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had believed Ava\u2019s resentment was something I simply failed to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>Now I knew someone had been feeding it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel spoke through clenched teeth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used our daughter to punish me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked at like this.<\/p>\n<p>But underneath the anger was something worse.<\/p>\n<p>Shame.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent years explaining Ava\u2019s behavior as abandonment pain without asking how that pain was being dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Ava and I sat side by side.<\/p>\n<p>She had leaned into me laughing at something out of frame.<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that bothered you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. That\u2019s what finally scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I realized I almost destroyed something good for you because I couldn\u2019t stand the idea of being replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>Laura took a careful step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t expect you to forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava immediately said, \u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came because you deserved to know the truth while there was still time to repair whatever can be repaired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava looked at the letters.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things that can\u2019t be repaired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence belonged to her, but I felt it too.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat heavily in the armchair.<\/p>\n<p>Laura remained standing.<\/p>\n<p>After a long silence, I asked, \u201cIs there anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about the way she said it made Daniel straighten.<\/p>\n<p>Laura reached into the bag again.<\/p>\n<p>This time she removed an old phone sealed inside a clear plastic evidence pouch.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy old phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is it in a bag?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my attorney told me not to alter anything on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked toward Ava.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are messages on this phone between Margaret and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I thought I had misheard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat messages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s voice became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother knew what I was telling Ava.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t stop me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s hands slowly lowered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel
