team.<\/p>\n<p>The old well stood fifty yards behind the farmhouse.<\/p>\n<p>It had been capped with concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Radar detected a side chamber below ground.<\/p>\n<p>Excavation exposed a narrow steel hatch.<\/p>\n<p>The hatch was opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was not a burial room.<\/p>\n<p>It was a living space.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>Ventilated.<\/p>\n<p>Recently stocked.<\/p>\n<p>A mattress.<\/p>\n<p>Food.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p>A battery lantern.<\/p>\n<p>And on the wall, a fresh drawing made in red crayon.<\/p>\n<p>Three people holding hands.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath them were three names.<\/p>\n<p>DADDY.<\/p>\n<p>ME.<\/p>\n<p>MARCUS.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the drawing.<\/p>\n<p>A child had been there recently.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Carter turned toward the evidence technician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch every inch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind the mattress they found a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A boy approximately six years old.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph had been taken within the last year.<\/p>\n<p>On the back Gerald had written:<\/p>\n<p>SAMUEL VALE.<\/p>\n<p>Carter stared.<\/p>\n<p>No Samuel Vale existed in any family record.<\/p>\n<p>No missing child in their known files had that assigned name.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald had been hiding one more child.<\/p>\n<p>And with Gerald and Marcus both captured, nobody yet knew where Samuel had been
