table.

A battery-powered lantern was warm.

One mattress held a recently used blanket.

Daniel entered the final chamber.

Names covered the wall.

Some scratched.

Some written in marker.

Some carved into paint.

SOPHIE.

CALEB.

HANNAH.

MEGAN.

AARON.

RACHEL.

Others investigators had never seen.

Daniel counted.

Seventeen names.

Carter stared at them.

“Photograph every one.”

A technician called from behind an old pump housing.

They found a steel cabinet.

Inside were recent photographs.

The top photograph showed Marcus.

He stood beside a boy who appeared fifteen or sixteen.

On the back was a date from only three weeks earlier.

And a name.

AARON.

Carter looked at Daniel.

Aaron Wells had vanished nine years ago at age eleven.

If the photograph was genuine, he was now twenty.

The person in the image looked younger, but prolonged deprivation could explain that.

Daniel turned over the next photograph.

Another boy.

Unknown.

Next.

A woman.

Unknown.

Then a photograph made Carter stop.

Thomas stood beside Marcus.

Between them was Walter Dean.

And behind the three men stood two other adults.

A woman and another man.

Daniel stared.

“This is bigger than three people.”

Carter looked at the seventeen names on the wall.

Thomas had been arrested.

Walter had been captured.

Marcus remained free.

But the photograph proved what Rebecca had feared and what the archive had begun to reveal.

There were more people involved.

And somewhere among them, someone had warned Marcus before police ever reached his house.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Seventeen Names on a Hidden Wall Expose a Wider Network, While
