We don\u2019t know her legal identity yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary looked through the hospital-room window.<\/p>\n<p>Lily slept curled beneath a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does a child disappear without anyone reporting her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was silent for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may be one of the worst questions we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back at Maplewood Drive, Carter received another update.<\/p>\n<p>The home-surveillance system had been found.<\/p>\n<p>Most recent footage had been automatically overwritten.<\/p>\n<p>But Thomas had maintained an external archive.<\/p>\n<p>Technicians were beginning extraction.<\/p>\n<p>Carter entered the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes lined one wall.<\/p>\n<p>Tools hung in clean rows.<\/p>\n<p>Everything was organized.<\/p>\n<p>Too organized.<\/p>\n<p>One workbench drawer contained receipts for building supplies purchased around the time the hidden basement wall appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Concrete mix.<\/p>\n<p>Framing timber.<\/p>\n<p>Insulation.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial screws.<\/p>\n<p>A second receipt listed cash payment for a rental concrete saw.<\/p>\n<p>The customer signature belonged to Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>But the rental form contained another name under \u201cadditional authorized user.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Carter stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRun him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, the result came back.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Vale, forty-three.<\/p>\n<p>Construction contractor.<\/p>\n<p>No felony convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Several old complaints involving aggressive behavior, none resulting in charges.<\/p>\n<p>Address twelve miles away.<\/p>\n<p>And one more fact.<\/p>\n<p>He was Thomas Miller\u2019s older half brother.<\/p>\n<p>Carter immediately requested officers locate him.<\/p>\n<p>No lights.<\/p>\n<p>No confrontation until they knew whether he was home.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel returned from the basement just as the call went out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter handed him the rental form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe Lily\u2019s other man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrother explains access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked toward the hidden room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll let evidence tell us which.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A technician hurried from the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recovered one video file from an old external drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasement footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least four visible in the segment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny adults?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re comparing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens in the video?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like Thomas is giving instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man glanced toward the house before answering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what they\u2019re supposed to say if anyone finds them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they told?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Thomas rescued them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swore under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>The technician continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tells them their real families didn\u2019t want them.
