What\u2019s your emergency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Claire straightened in her chair and glanced at the incoming number on her screen. The communications center around her hummed with ordinary night-shift noise\u2014keyboards, radios, muted conversations, the soft electronic chirp of calls entering the queue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello? CHILD FEARFUL OF FATHER.<\/p>\n<p>The address populated on her monitor: 1427 Maplewood Drive.<\/p>\n<p>Claire sent the location to patrol while keeping her voice soft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, I\u2019m going to ask you something about the snake. You don\u2019t have to explain anything you don\u2019t understand. Can you tell me where it is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Emily sucked in a breath.<\/p>\n<p>Claire froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line became almost completely silent.<\/p>\n<p>Claire could hear movement somewhere beyond the child\u2019s phone. Slow footsteps. A door opening. Then the faint clink of something metallic.<\/p>\n<p>Emily whispered so softly Claire nearly missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s hand moved immediately to the dispatch channel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, listen to me. That means you deserve help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily sniffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says people who tell secrets make bad things happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bad things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she whispered, \u201cSophie told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s fingers paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Sophie there with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked again at the notes on her screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Claire could ask more, Emily made a frightened little sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s downstairs again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire could hear something else now.<\/p>\n<p>A heavy door.<\/p>\n<p>Then a metallic click.<\/p>\n<p>A lock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, is there a basement in your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child whispered, \u201cI\u2019m not allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot allowed to what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo near the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire added BASEMENT to the call notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Daddy keeps bad things downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dispatcher felt cold despite the warm communications room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of bad things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who don\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stopped typing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child seemed to realize she had said too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, you\u2019re not in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s eyes moved instantly to the supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat camera?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>If Thomas Miller was monitoring the interior of the house, he might already know Emily had left her bedroom or taken a phone.<\/p>\n<p>Claire sent another message to responding officers.<\/p>\n<p>POSSIBLE INTERIOR SURVEILLANCE. APPROACH WITH CAUTION. CHILD STATES FATHER KEEPS PEOPLE IN BASEMENT.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel acknowledged the update from his patrol car.<\/p>\n<p>Claire kept Emily talking only when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat phone are you using?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy\u2019s old one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes your father know you have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the dresser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That detail settled heavily in Claire\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p>If the phone had belonged to Emily\u2019s missing mother, it might explain why the father did not know the child could call for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, the officers are almost there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl began crying without making any sound.<\/p>\n<p>Claire could tell from her breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill they take me downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promise they\u2019re coming to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Headlights appeared on Claire\u2019s patrol map near Maplewood Drive.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice came across the radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnit Twenty-Four arriving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire felt some of the pressure leave her chest.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily whispered something unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell the lady officer to look at my arm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to your arm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can show her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside the Miller house, Daniel parked a short distance from the driveway. Mary stepped from the passenger side and studied the property.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing looked immediately wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The lawn was trimmed. Porch lights glowed beside a white front door. A child\u2019s bicycle leaned against the garage. Curtains covered the downstairs windows.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel checked the dispatch notes again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight-year-old girl,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mary nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather inside. Mother supposedly gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd something about a basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They approached without sirens.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knocked.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly half a minute, nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then the porch light above them switched off.<\/p>\n<p>Mary glanced at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Someone inside was watching.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knocked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpringfield Police Department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lock turned.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened several inches.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Miller stood behind it wearing jeans and a gray T-shirt. He appeared to be in his late thirties or early forties, clean-shaven, broad-shouldered, composed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received a call from this address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got the wrong house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not smile back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have a daughter named Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The change in Thomas\u2019s expression lasted less than a second.<\/p>\n<p>But Mary saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we speak with her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas leaned against the doorframe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary glanced at the brightly lit staircase behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to confirm that she\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen this should only take a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said she\u2019s sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, someone contacted emergency services from this residence. We have to investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then his gaze moved toward Mary.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officers entered.<\/p>\n<p>The house smelled faintly of furniture polish and something heavier underneath it\u2014dampness, perhaps, or old concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Family photographs lined the living-room wall.<\/p>\n<p>Most showed Thomas and Emily.<\/p>\n<p>Mary noticed something else immediately.<\/p>\n<p>There was almost no sign that another adult woman lived there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d Thomas called.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was suddenly warm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweetheart, police officers are here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watched Thomas while Mary studied the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Then a small figure appeared at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Emily wore oversized pajamas and held one arm tightly against her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas smiled at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at her father.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mary.<\/p>\n<p>Mary had interviewed frightened children before.
