I would have run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s eyes closed again.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanny?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry about the pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The subject came from so far back that for a moment I could not respond.<\/p>\n<p>We had lost the baby early in our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Too early for most people to understand why the silence afterward had felt so enormous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t mean for losing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We had grieved considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a very Danny definition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all I\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around four, her breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>Claire returned to the room without being called.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach sat at Rachel\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n<p>Michael took the other side.<\/p>\n<p>Morning slowly entered through the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel opened her eyes once.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at remembered mine.<\/p>\n<p>Do not measure love by how much you can suffer.<\/p>\n<p>I had thought staying meant holding her here.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly I understood that staying might mean something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to keep fighting because I\u2019m scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Michael bowed his head.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my eyes on my wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t owe me another hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s fingers tightened faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want you to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you don\u2019t have to stay for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tear moved from the corner of her eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lips moved.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kissed her forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing slowed.<\/p>\n<p>A minute passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped counting.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I told her about the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The orange curtains.<\/p>\n<p>The lake.<\/p>\n<p>The canoe.<\/p>\n<p>The terrible cabin.<\/p>\n<p>The repair shop.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The second wedding.<\/p>\n<p>I told her everything I could remember.<\/p>\n<p>When I ran out of stories, I started again.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, Rachel\u2019s hand relaxed inside mine.<\/p>\n<p>I did not notice immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Claire did.<\/p>\n<p>She moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Placed two fingers against Rachel\u2019s wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Then listened.<\/p>\n<p>The room became perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had died with her wedding ring on her finger and my hand around hers.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I felt nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I leaned forward and pressed my forehead against her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Karen was sobbing.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Claire quietly left us.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough.<\/p>\n<p>The effort was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I touched her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words came out broken.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered what she had taught me too late and exactly in time.<\/p>\n<p>Staying was not the same as refusing to let go.<\/p>\n<p>So I sat beside my wife until I was ready to
