So what did you want left after you were gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe dancing badly in the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did dance badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStealing your fries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou denied doing that for twenty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sick, Danny. Not dishonest about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel smiled through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted you to remember trips. Christmas mornings. That awful cabin where the roof leaked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou chose the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou approved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou showed me photographs taken during summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had excellent reviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had raccoons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds the hospital room contained our marriage again.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to choose which memories survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis room might become one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I\u2019m here through treatments, that will become part of us too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time I let the apology remain between us.<\/p>\n<p>Karen arrived that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped through the doorway, saw the document on the table, and stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew she was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew why she divorced me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned away.<\/p>\n<p>It was one thing to discover Rachel had lied.<\/p>\n<p>It was another to understand that someone who had hugged me through the divorce had known the reason for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you,\u201d Karen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I was her husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me blame myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched her destroy herself too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause every time I threatened to tell you, Rachel said she would disappear completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Karen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was terrified you would find out and abandon everything to care for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would have been my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cKaren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen faced her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had three years of controlling the truth. I\u2019m finished helping you do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>Karen reached into her purse.<\/p>\n<p>She removed another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaren, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have done this a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>The date was from one month earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy last letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote it before the surgery was scheduled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought you were going to die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought there was a real possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen quietly left us alone.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the envelope was our wedding photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was twenty-four in it. Customers.
