She had continued treatment afterward. There had been complications, temporary improvements, setbacks, and another procedure.<\/p>\n<p>All while I had been learning how to cook for one.<\/p>\n<p>All while I had hated her.<\/p>\n<p>All while I had sometimes hoped she would call so I could refuse to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Karen arrived shortly before three in the morning wearing her wedding dress beneath a borrowed coat.<\/p>\n<p>I saw her through the glass doors and stood.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped when she saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanny\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t do this here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long, Karen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the nurses\u2019 station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands curled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me spend three years thinking she left because she didn\u2019t love me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI begged her to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that mattered more than what she was doing to us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I haven\u2019t asked myself that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned away before anger made me cruel.<\/p>\n<p>She sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>For a minute neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Karen said, \u201cShe thought you would give up everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour shop. Your plans. Your whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would have been my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Karen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you would choose her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I would have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was exactly what scared her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood again because sitting felt impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe divorced me because she knew I loved her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe divorced you because she thought love would turn you into her caretaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Karen wiped beneath one eye carefully, trying not to smear the makeup left from her wedding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel watched what happened to her father after her mother became ill. You know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know he loved his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disappeared into caring for her. After she died, he never recovered. Rachel has been terrified of repeating that since she was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could have talked to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could have trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could have let me decide what I was willing to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen\u2019s agreement drained the fight out of me.<\/p>\n<p>I sat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left the ring on my pillow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen looked toward the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you need to ask her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nurse came for me at four fifteen.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was awake.<\/p>\n<p>The room was dim except for monitor lights and the pale glow from the hallway. She looked impossibly small beneath the hospital blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes opened when I approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped beside the bed.<\/p>\n<p>There were a hundred things I wanted to say.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I reached into my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>I placed her wedding ring on the bedside table.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe for the same reason you made me your emergency contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A tear escaped toward her temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanny, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her eyes again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat explains the hospital. It doesn\u2019t explain what you did to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened around the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought if you believed I stopped loving you, eventually you would stop loving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was so absurd and so completely Rachel that anger and grief collided inside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought making me hate you was kindness?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it would give you a life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel began crying without making a sound.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled the chair closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need the truth now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo protecting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already decided three years of my life for me.
