Everybody thought lineage created entitlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he chose me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe considered you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat stopped him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s heart beat harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told him you would burn everything before becoming him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A strange, painful pride moved through Mara.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like the closest thing Evelyn could have offered as a blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoseph decided to test her prediction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave Evelyn control of the final parcels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to see what I\u2019d do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caleb looked almost amused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to see what you would do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara understood.<\/p>\n<p>Even this confrontation had been anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph had turned his estate into a final experiment.<\/p>\n<p>Would Mara take money?<\/p>\n<p>Protect family?<\/p>\n<p>Expose everyone?<\/p>\n<p>Continue the system?<\/p>\n<p>Caleb stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara heard Collins in her ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tightened her grip.<\/p>\n<p>Then a gunshot echoed from the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb jerked.<\/p>\n<p>Not hit.<\/p>\n<p>Startled.<\/p>\n<p>Police shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Mara dropped behind the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb ran toward the drainage tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Officers moved in.<\/p>\n<p>A second gunshot sounded from another direction.<\/p>\n<p>Not police.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb disappeared into the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Collins reached Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho fired?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Radio traffic erupted.<\/p>\n<p>An officer shouted that a vehicle was leaving from the north access road.<\/p>\n<p>Another unit pursued.<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked toward the ridge.<\/p>\n<p>A figure stood briefly among the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Gray-haired.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital clothing beneath a borrowed coat.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>He had left the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas appeared behind police lines, furious.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel lowered the gun and surrendered it to an officer.<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou followed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Caleb would have a second man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat second man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pointed toward the escaping vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone Joseph recruited before Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collins demanded a name.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hospital orderly who moved Nathan in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Still alive.<\/p>\n<p>Still part of the system.<\/p>\n<p>And now fleeing with Caleb.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10873\">Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Owen Price\u2019s Return Explained Nathan\u2019s Disappearance, but His Confession Revealed Caleb Had Already Taken the One Person Who Could Destroy Joseph\u2019s Legacy<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mara showed Collins the message.
