Head injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he identify anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was unconscious when they found him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collins looked at Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there was a message written on the motel mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collins read from his notes.<\/p>\n<p>JOSEPH CHOSE BLOOD.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>James frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret looked toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s biological son.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph\u2019s grandson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel saw her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cJoseph chose blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel wasn\u2019t his successor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas understood next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe chose one of his grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth looked toward James.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph had also considered James his grandson through Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Mara was Robert\u2019s legal daughter but Thomas\u2019s biological daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph\u2019s definition of blood might not include her at all.<\/p>\n<p>Then Collins\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time the bank manager was calling from downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had triggered an alarm in the legacy vault.<\/p>\n<p>They ran.<\/p>\n<p>Box 331 remained open on the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing obvious had moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mara saw the envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>The M.B. file remained.<\/p>\n<p>N.V.<\/p>\n<p>D.B.<\/p>\n<p>Others.<\/p>\n<p>But one envelope that had been beneath the stack was now lying alone in the center of the table.<\/p>\n<p>Collins approached carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Initials:<\/p>\n<p>C.W.<\/p>\n<p>Date:<\/p>\n<p>1976.<\/p>\n<p>Carter Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cThe identity Samuel stole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara opened the envelope after Collins photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was an infant death certificate for Carter Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s nephew.<\/p>\n<p>And behind it, another birth record.<\/p>\n<p>Same date.<\/p>\n<p>Same mother.<\/p>\n<p>Different child.<\/p>\n<p>A twin.<\/p>\n<p>The second infant had survived.<\/p>\n<p>Name:<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, Joseph had written:<\/p>\n<p>C.W. identity retained for future use.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb suitable.<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had not invented Carter Wynn alone.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph had created the identity decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>And Carter\u2019s surviving twin, Caleb, had grown up.<\/p>\n<p>Collins searched the name.<\/p>\n<p>A current record appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>Age fifty.<\/p>\n<p>Occupation:<\/p>\n<p>Private security consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Registered address:<\/p>\n<p>Greyson County.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s who took me from the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Marianne took you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe arranged it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the man who drove the car was Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe successor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone could respond, the lights in the bank went out.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency lamps flickered on.<\/p>\n<p>An alarm began screaming.<\/p>\n<p>From inside the vault came the heavy metallic sound of a door closing.<\/p>\n<p>James turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>The black book was gone.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10871\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Caleb Wynn Took Joseph\u2019s Ledger but Left Behind One Page, and Its Final Entry Revealed Why Samuel Had Been Trying to Reach Evelyn<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ruth\u2019s final words seemed to remain suspended above Evelyn\u2019s kitchen table.
