something Marianne told me never to open unless Evelyn was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Robert left something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked toward Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was written by Robert Bell in 2008.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne told me reading it would change what I believed about Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne said softly, If I had known earlier, I would like to believe I would have brought you home. The truth is harder. By the time I found you, you already had a home.<\/p>\n<p>I have spent my life blaming Evelyn for making decisions without me, while quietly benefiting from some of those decisions because they spared me from making them myself.<\/p>\n<p>You were sent away because my father and my half brother made our family unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn agreed because she believed it would be temporary.<\/p>\n<p>I agreed because I was afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth carried it out because she believed neither Evelyn nor I would remain strong enough to keep you hidden.<\/p>\n<p>All three of us failed you differently.<\/p>\n<p>James paused.<\/p>\n<p>Mara wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stayed with us.<\/p>\n<p>We called him Daniel because Samuel believed Nathan he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James continued.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph told me he had one final insurance policy.<\/p>\n<p>A ledger containing proof of every land transaction and every person who took pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>Every night.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn wound the clock every night for decades.<\/p>\n<p>The place she touched every day.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lifted it from the wall.<\/p>\n<p>A small brass key had been taped inside the rear housing.<\/p>\n<p>Different from the storage key.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Stamped:<\/p>\n<p>GNB 331.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas recognized the Evelyn\u2019s current box.<\/p>\n<p>Collins called the bank manager.<\/p>\n<p>Box 331 still existed in legacy storage.<\/p>\n<p>Registered owner:<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Secondary authorized
