Make sure nobody can prove anything with one piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara thought of the flour tin, Unit 214, the bank box, the quarry ammunition box, Ruth\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Each location contained enough to raise questions.<\/p>\n<p>None contained enough to finish the story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s why Ruth disappeared,\u201d Mara said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe went for another piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout her car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could have taken a taxi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara checked Ruth\u2019s landline caller ID.<\/p>\n<p>The last outgoing call had been placed forty minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>A taxi company.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel called.<\/p>\n<p>The dispatcher confirmed an elderly woman had been collected from Ruth\u2019s address and driven to the Greyson bus terminal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout half an hour ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDestination after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust the terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Ruth wanted to run, she had decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why the bus station?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara thought of the 1985 relocation receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Hartley Bus Lines.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth and James Keller.<\/p>\n<p>The place where she had supposedly taken Nathan west.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s repeating something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They drove to the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>It was smaller than Mara remembered, a low concrete building beside the old railway tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth was not inside.<\/p>\n<p>The clerk remembered her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe bought a locker token.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clerk pointed toward a wall of old coin lockers near the rear exit.<\/p>\n<p>Locker 106.<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared at the number.<\/p>\n<p>1:06.<\/p>\n<p>Owen moved him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel inserted the key from Ruth\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Locker 106 opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside sat a canvas medical bag.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lifted it out.<\/p>\n<p>The leather was cracked and stained.<\/p>\n<p>A brass nameplate read:<\/p>\n<p>DR. LEONARD CHASE.<\/p>\n<p>The obstetrician whose affidavit had been in Evelyn\u2019s bank box.<\/p>\n<p>Mara opened the bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were medical instruments, prescription pads, and a sealed envelope marked:<\/p>\n<p>IF EVELYN FAILS TO TELL THEM.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chase\u2019s handwriting was shaky.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was dated 2003.<\/p>\n<p>He described being pressured in 1984 to conceal Nathan Vale\u2019s birth under Evelyn Bell\u2019s hospital account.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted preparing false documents.<\/p>\n<p>He also admitted something worse.<\/p>\n<p>On June 11, 1984, Evelyn Bell gave birth to a healthy boy.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Two infants therefore existed.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Vale, born April 9.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Bell, born June 11.<\/p>\n<p>In August 1989, Samuel demanded custody of the boy he believed was his biological son.<\/p>\n<p>He had discovered Nathan survived.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn feared Samuel would take Nathan and use him to control Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>So she proposed a switch.<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s hands trembled as she read.<\/p>\n<p>Robert initially refused.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel threatened to expose Evelyn\u2019s financial crimes and have both children removed from the Bell home.<\/p>\n<p>Robert agreed to help hide Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>But according to Chase, the plan was never supposed to involve surrendering the real Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>The intended arrangement was to send Samuel away with forged records leading him toward a nonexistent adoptive family in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>Both boys were supposed to remain safe.<\/p>\n<p>Something changed on August 21.<\/p>\n<p>Mara turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph had been underlined.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth arrived at my office that morning carrying a sleeping child. She told me Samuel had taken the wrong boy.<\/p>\n<p>I asked which child she meant.<\/p>\n<p>She said Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he took understood the cruelty of how it looked.<\/p>\n<p>But the photograph had been taken from far away.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Evelyn had been following.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps she had been trying to recover him.<\/p>\n<p>Another note was attached.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn followed Samuel north.<\/p>\n<p>Robert followed Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed with Nathan and Mara.<\/p>\n<p>Only Robert returned.<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s blood ran cold.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas read it again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly Robert returned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cBut Evelyn lived another thirty-seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>August 21.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had obviously returned eventually.<\/p>\n<p>The question was when.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched deeper.<\/p>\n<p>He found a folded motel receipt.<\/p>\n<p>August 21\u201323, 1989.<\/p>\n<p>One room.<\/p>\n<p>Guest:<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Location:<\/p>\n<p>Benton, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>The town near the private clinic Samuel had used after Nathan\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>Mara whispered, \u201cShe followed him all the way to Oregon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd came home without her son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked toward the terminal doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Samuel took Daniel to Oregon and Evelyn followed, then somebody in Oregon knows what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret suddenly reached for the medical bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook for Chase\u2019s patient codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara found a small notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret flipped pages until she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>A list of initials.<\/p>\n<p>N.V.<\/p>\n<p>D.B.<\/p>\n<p>E.B.<\/p>\n<p>And one unfamiliar entry.<\/p>\n<p>D.B. \u2192 J.K. \u2014 8\/23\/89.<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJ.K.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cJames Keller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The identity Ruth had used for Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>But Nathan had stayed in Greyson.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant the James Keller identity was available.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn gave Daniel Nathan\u2019s false Oregon identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had taken Daniel Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn followed.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, two days later, Daniel was renamed James Keller.<\/p>\n<p>Then what?<\/p>\n<p>A final address appeared beside the entry.<\/p>\n<p>Portland.<\/p>\n<p>Mara searched it on her phone.<\/p>\n<p>The house had belonged to Paul and Marianne Keller.<\/p>\n<p>The adoptive parents Samuel believed had taken Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t adopt Nathan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey adopted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence broke something in his voice.<\/p>\n<p>Mara reached for him.<\/p>\n<p>This time he let her.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas noticed another slip inside the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>A recent printout.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth had written across it:<\/p>\n<p>CURRENT NAME \u2014 JAMES KELLER NOW USES JAMES BELLAMY.<\/p>\n<p>Below was a residential address in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>And a phone number.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the page containing the current identity of the boy who had been born with his name.<\/p>\n<p>His biological brother by upbringing\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s lost son.<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s biological
