it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert agreed to what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Mara searched the envelope again.<\/p>\n<p>One final photograph slid out.<\/p>\n<p>Two boys stood beside Robert\u2019s red pickup.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel, age five.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie\u2014Nathan\u2014also five.<\/p>\n<p>They were dressed almost identically.<\/p>\n<p>Same haircuts.<\/p>\n<p>Same striped shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Same narrow faces.<\/p>\n<p>Not twins.<\/p>\n<p>But close enough in age and appearance to confuse anyone who had not known them well.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Ruth had written:<\/p>\n<p>August 20, 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow Daniel goes with Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stays with Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Mara read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s why the birth certificates existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pressed both hands to his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara understood at last.<\/p>\n<p>The forged document naming Samuel as Daniel\u2019s father had not been created merely to deceive Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>It had been prepared for a child Samuel believed was his.<\/p>\n<p>A child he intended to take.<\/p>\n<p>But Evelyn and Ruth had switched the boys.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel left with one child.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn kept the other.<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at the man she had called her brother for thirty-eight years.<\/p>\n<p>If the plan described on the photograph had actually happened, Daniel Bell had not been born Daniel Bell.<\/p>\n<p>He was Nathan Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s supposedly dead son.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere, the real Daniel Bell had been taken away under Nathan\u2019s
