Tiny. Breathing badly. Margaret called me, but I was two counties away on a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara could hear the memory changing him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me the baby had died before I could reach the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he hadn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel took him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward Mara.<\/p>\n<p>They both knew now.<\/p>\n<p>Mill Road.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks after Nathan\u2019s supposed death, he found a hospital orderly who remembered Samuel carrying a wrapped infant through a service corridor shortly after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas confronted Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>She denied everything.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel produced a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>A confession.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas supposedly admitted he had taken Nathan from the hospital and abandoned him because he believed Robert was the father.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed the signature was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t remember writing it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why believe it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I had been drinking that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel made sure of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara understood.<\/p>\n<p>Drugged.<\/p>\n<p>Manipulated.<\/p>\n<p>Memory gaps turned into evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had spent five years believing his anger had driven him to some unforgivable act he could not remember.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, he finally discovered Samuel had forged the confession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what you found before Mill Road,\u201d Mara said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarbon sheets from Samuel\u2019s office. Practice signatures. Copies of hospital transfer forms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you confronted Mom and Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Mom bring Daniel\u2019s false birth certificate later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Samuel gave her a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s voice went flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if I went to police, he would produce records making it appear Robert fathered Nathan and I killed the baby out of revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara whispered, \u201cSo Mom gave you a different scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe showed me Daniel\u2019s certificate naming Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought Samuel had fathered Daniel too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently everybody was sleeping with everybody except the people accused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas ignored the bitterness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn told me Samuel was Daniel\u2019s father and that exposing him would destroy her marriage, leave her children without a home, and send Daniel into a custody battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed she was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara said, \u201cThat still doesn\u2019t explain leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was quiet long enough that she thought the call had dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cSamuel had Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took her somewhere after Mill Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKidnapped her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know. Evelyn told me Margaret would disappear permanently if I stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you ran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to police first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the newspaper said you disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to report Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe detective I spoke to called him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel\u2019s brother-in-law was sheriff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swore again.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin two hours, Samuel knew exactly what I had said. Margaret called me from a pay phone crying. She told me to leave or he would kill her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara finally understood why a man could vanish without being physically forced.<\/p>\n<p>He had not been fleeing guilt.<\/p>\n<p>He had been buying someone else\u2019s survival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to Margaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on what Samuel believes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nearly missed the turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas, where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not telling you over a phone Samuel may be tracking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen meet us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel glanced at Mara.<\/p>\n<p>She understood his decision before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quarry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas cursed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Samuel follows, at least we\u2019ll all finally be in one place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly what he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen bring Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that my whole life was used as camouflage for other people\u2019s crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara put a hand on his arm.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand Mom manufactured a birth certificate to make you leave. I understand Samuel pretended to be an investigator so he could control what I discovered. And I understand everybody keeps telling me not to go places because they think ignorance is safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cDaniel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Mara watched the road.<\/p>\n<p>The black sedan had reappeared three cars behind them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou realize he\u2019s following.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tired of chasing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at her brother.<\/p>\n<p>The anger in him had changed since the bank.<\/p>\n<p>It was no longer confused.<\/p>\n<p>It had direction.<\/p>\n<p>That worried her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, finding the truth does not require proving you\u2019re fearless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to prove anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re driving toward a quarry with a criminal behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>The dispatcher promised to send deputies.<\/p>\n<p>Mara gave the parcel location and Samuel\u2019s vehicle description.<\/p>\n<p>Then they turned onto Mill Road.<\/p>\n<p>The asphalt narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Houses disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Fields gave way to scrub pine and abandoned industrial lots.<\/p>\n<p>The quarry entrance had been chained shut years ago, but the side access road remained passable.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel drove around a concrete barrier and stopped beside a collapsed equipment shed.<\/p>\n<p>The black sedan did not appear.<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stopped following.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr took another entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel got out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay in the truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not.<\/p>\n<p>They walked toward the parcel marked in the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>The land had once held a small maintenance building.<\/p>\n<p>Only the foundation remained.<\/p>\n<p>Mara checked the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A question mark beside the parcel number.<\/p>\n<p>No initial.<\/p>\n<p>No known owner.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched near the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly are we looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara remembered the missing $1,060.<\/p>\n<p>The exact amount Samuel told them to explain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She circled the site.<\/p>\n<p>Near the edge of the foundation, a weathered concrete marker protruded through weeds.<\/p>\n<p>Not a grave marker.<\/p>\n<p>A property survey post.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had carved numbers into it.<\/p>\n<p>1060.<\/p>\n<p>Mara called Daniel over.<\/p>\n<p>He crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thousand sixty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missing money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo dollar sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be a measurement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took out his phone compass.<\/p>\n<p>The marker also bore an arrow.<\/p>\n<p>Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>They followed it.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred feet into the trees, they found a dry drainage channel.<\/p>\n<p>Two hundred farther, an old culvert.<\/p>\n<p>Mara spotted rusted metal beneath leaves.<\/p>\n<p>A small ammunition box.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pried it open.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a plastic bag containing photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A premature infant inside an incubator.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel holding the baby.<\/p>\n<p>Another showed Evelyn near the nursery door.<\/p>\n<p>On the back of each photograph, someone had written dates.<\/p>\n<p>April 9.<\/p>\n<p>April 10.<\/p>\n<p>April 10 \u2014 1:06 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>106.<\/p>\n<p>Not 1060.<\/p>\n<p>Mara wiped dirt from the survey stone in her memory.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not 1060.<\/p>\n<p>10:60 made no sense.<\/p>\n<p>1:060.<\/p>\n<p>Or 1:06 O.<\/p>\n<p>She looked deeper into the box.<\/p>\n<p>A folded county map.<\/p>\n<p>A red circle around an old drainage tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Handwritten beside it:<\/p>\n<p>1:06 \u2014 Owen moved him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen,\u201d Mara said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Owen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They heard a branch snap behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Both turned.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood twenty feet away.<\/p>\n<p>He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Owen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas came closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen Price. Night orderly at the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one you questioned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he take Nathan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe moved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel paid him to remove Nathan from the nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara pointed to the map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I spent thirty-seven years trying to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know whether Nathan died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s expression answered before his words did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara felt the ground shift beneath the story yet again.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said Samuel took Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital records said he lived eleven hours.<\/p>\n<p>No death certificate existed.<\/p>\n<p>Now Thomas was saying Nathan might have survived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Margaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked behind him.<\/p>\n<p>A woman emerged from between the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>White-haired.<\/p>\n<p>Late sixties.<\/p>\n<p>Her face resembled Thomas enough that Mara knew immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Vale.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>When she saw the photographs in Daniel\u2019s hand, she began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Evelyn destroyed those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held up the infant picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Nathan dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret pressed her lips together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can you not know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Samuel brought me a body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cBut it wasn\u2019t my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone could respond, an engine roared beyond the trees.<\/p>\n<p>A black sedan burst onto the service road.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>He held no gun.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow made him more frightening.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have stayed gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas moved in front of his sister.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill protecting everybody, Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Nathan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s eyes moved to him.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time all day, his composure cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you that name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara held up the bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed completely.<\/p>\n<p>Not anger.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou opened the bank box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou opened it yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at the bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t see that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Mom hid it from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cWhere is my son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died forty-two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought me another baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cTell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at each of them.<\/p>\n<p>Then laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all spent your lives asking the wrong question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cWhich is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pointed toward Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan didn\u2019t disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he pointed at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou grew up with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10865\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Samuel\u2019s Claim About Nathan Forced Mara and Daniel to Reexamine Their Childhood, Until One Photograph Revealed Which Family Member Had Been Replaced<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel did not drive toward Mill Road.
