Nothing inside the private room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They hurried to Daniel\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n<p>His portable cassette unit was in a bag behind the seat.<\/p>\n<p>The miniature tape required an adapter he happened to have because Carter\u2014Samuel\u2014had recommended he buy one months earlier for archived interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel noticed the irony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe prepared me to hear this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara said, \u201cOr prepared us to hear whatever he left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They inserted the tape.<\/p>\n<p>A woman\u2019s voice filled the cab.<\/p>\n<p>Young.<\/p>\n<p>Weak.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Vale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Thomas finds this, I need him to know Samuel lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Static crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Nathan was dead before I agreed to anything. He said there was no point destroying Thomas\u2019s life over a child who never breathed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara gripped the dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Nathan lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lived long enough for Samuel to see him. Long enough for Samuel to hold him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Samuel knew the baby was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cSamuel was Nathan\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas thought Robert Bell had gotten me pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara froze.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The reason Thomas cared.<\/p>\n<p>The reason Daniel\u2019s false certificate mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said, \u201cSamuel told Thomas that Robert betrayed him with me. He used it to turn them against each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Dad never\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI let him believe it because Samuel threatened Evelyn. He said he would tell Robert about Mara and Thomas if I spoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret coughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas, if you ever hear this, Robert did not betray you. Samuel did. And Evelyn helped him because she was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret said the words that changed everything again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan did not die naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara turned toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s voice dropped to a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel took him from the nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape cut off.<\/p>\n<p>Not gradually.<\/p>\n<p>Abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel hit PLAY again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Nathan died eleven hours after birth\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the death certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel already had his phone out.<\/p>\n<p>He searched public records.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Vale.<\/p>\n<p>No result.<\/p>\n<p>Baby Boy Bell.<\/p>\n<p>No result.<\/p>\n<p>April 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s unease deepened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA baby who officially never existed can\u2019t have an official death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where was he buried?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara thought of the land ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve properties.<\/p>\n<p>Letters beside them.<\/p>\n<p>One address marked with a question mark.<\/p>\n<p>Mill Road.<\/p>\n<p>The place of the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>She took out the photograph of the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>One of the final three properties was listed only by parcel number.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen toward her.<\/p>\n<p>The parcel had belonged to S.W.
