His thumb covered Samuel Wynn\u2019s name, but Mara had already seen enough. She could not stop seeing it.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>Father.<\/p>\n<p>Not Robert Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Not Thomas Vale.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had helped Evelyn move money through shell companies, threatened Thomas into leaving town, and fired a gun during the confrontation on Mill Road.<\/p>\n<p>The same man Ruth now claimed was standing outside under the name Carter Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel found his voice first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. What\u2019s impossible is how long we let him get away with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another knock.<\/p>\n<p>Carter called through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel? I saw your truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was familiar to Mara only because Daniel had put him on speaker once, months earlier, while asking about an old county deed. Carter had sounded younger than Daniel\u2014perhaps forty-five or fifty\u2014with a flat, practical voice and the casual confidence of someone accustomed to asking questions other people did not want answered.<\/p>\n<p>The man outside could not be Samuel Wynn.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel would have been in his thirties in 1989. I have something you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara stepped closer to the window without crossing in front of it.<\/p>\n<p>Through the curtain\u2019s edge, she could make out a tall man beside the porch rail. Dark coat. Gray threaded through black hair. Sunglasses despite the overcast sky.<\/p>\n<p>His posture bothered her.<\/p>\n<p>She had seen it somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Not in life.<\/p>\n<p>In the photograph from the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Wynn had stood with one shoulder dropped slightly lower than the other.<\/p>\n<p>So did Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Mara turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel understood.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out his phone and opened the picture he had taken.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Carter outside.<\/p>\n<p>Same long nose.<\/p>\n<p>Same narrow chin.<\/p>\n<p>Age had altered the face, but not enough.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s expression emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth whispered, \u201cEvelyn found out six years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same time I started investigating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom knew the investigator I hired was Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe figured it out after you mentioned his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she said nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted to know why he\u2019d come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t come back. S.W.
