Deep lines bracketed his mouth. His left shoulder sat slightly lower than his right, giving him a permanent tilt.<\/p>\n<p>But the eyes were unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>Dark.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy-lidded.<\/p>\n<p>The same eyes in the photograph beside her father\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas knocked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing her name from him frightened her more than seeing his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know who I am?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother kept photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t answer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rain streamed from his hair onto his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard about Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara kept the door locked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman named Ruth Bell called my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had one when I disappeared too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word hung between them.<\/p>\n<p>Disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>He did not deny it.<\/p>\n<p>Mara glanced toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The money remained uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>The flour tin stood open.<\/p>\n<p>She turned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo know whether your mother left you anything unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her heartbeat accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas watched her face.<\/p>\n<p>He knew she was lying.<\/p>\n<p>Mara saw it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Still, he did not challenge her.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he looked past her toward the dim hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not coming inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t inviting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s probably wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His calmness irritated her.<\/p>\n<p>She unlocked the deadbolt but left the chain attached and opened the door three inches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy were you reported missing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a short answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came to my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to affect him.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cI suppose not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened on August seventeenth, 1989?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every trace of color left Thomas\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>That was her first confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>He knew exactly what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you hear that date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara, where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>The chain pulled tight as Mara instinctively tried to shut the door.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked over his shoulder at the rain-dark street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour brother here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know I\u2019m here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it that way tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara almost laughed from disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother left the same instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>When he opened them, something in his expression had hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she finally decided to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t tell me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she leave a key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s hand moved unconsciously toward her pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas noticed.<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLangford?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means she kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in Unit 214?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProof that three people lied about the night I disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara felt the first blow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A car appeared at the far end of the street.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow morning,\u201d he said. \u201cGo to the storage unit before anyone else does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s anger flared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking about Daniel like he\u2019s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say he was dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why can\u2019t he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Daniel spent the last six years asking questions your mother refused to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave her a tired look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know your brother. When he wants something, he keeps digging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he thought he was protecting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The approaching car slowed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stepped off the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him why he hired a private investigator named Carter Wynn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Mara unhooked the chain and opened the door fully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you kill someone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rain ran down his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked toward the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent half my life wondering the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The car turned onto another street.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas disappeared around the corner on foot.<\/p>\n<p>Mara locked the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then she called Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He answered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind the folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you hire Carter Wynn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Mara closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had been telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you hear that name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been investigating Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s grip tightened on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nearly dropped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me stand beside Mom\u2019s coffin three days ago without saying any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it wasn\u2019t the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen exactly was the time going to be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I knew what was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She paced into the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened in August 1989?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel inhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom met Thomas on Mill Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad followed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found her calendar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cWhat else did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at the flour tin.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing, she thought.<\/p>\n<p>She remembered Evelyn\u2019s instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Do not tell Daniel until you know what happened in August.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust the calendar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>This one felt different.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was deciding whether to believe her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay at the house tonight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLock everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Carter called me after the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks someone else has been searching for the same records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounty property transfers. Bank ledgers. Police archives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we find what Mom hid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at the cash again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, why were you investigating Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said something before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their father had suffered a stroke in the kitchen eleven years earlier. He survived eleven days in the hospital but never regained full speech.<\/p>\n<p>Mara remembered fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Robert squeezing her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Robert crying when Daniel entered.<\/p>\n<p>Robert trying repeatedly to say a name no one understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel spoke slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Thomas didn\u2019t steal it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteal what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s all he could get out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara lowered herself into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Mom heard him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me Dad was confused from the stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara waited.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA deposit slip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-two thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad had forty-two thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked at the bundles of cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAugust 21, 1989.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four days after Evelyn planned to meet Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Three days after Thomas vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Mara felt suddenly cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did the money come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I hired Carter to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe traced it to a company account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale-Bell Construction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their father\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p>Mara pressed her hand against her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the money stolen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what police believed Thomas had done before he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom told us Thomas betrayed Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left out the part where forty-two thousand dollars ended up in her own account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rain continued beating against the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Mara stared at the flour tin.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen thousand nine hundred forty dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Not the same amount.<\/p>\n<p>But suddenly money hidden by Evelyn no longer seemed harmless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming over,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not know why she refused.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because Evelyn had asked her not to tell him yet.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because Thomas\u2019s warning had lodged beneath her skin.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps because Daniel had already hidden two years of investigation from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019ll pretend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll call tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:40 the next morning, Mara parked outside Langford Storage.<\/p>\n<p>The facility sat behind a row of auto shops on the industrial edge of town.<\/p>\n<p>Unit 214 was on the second floor.<\/p>\n<p>The brass key worked.<\/p>\n<p>Mara lifted the metal door.<\/p>\n<p>Inside stood three cardboard boxes.<\/p>\n<p>A wooden chair.<\/p>\n<p>A locked filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>And an old red metal toolbox with ROBERT BELL painted across the lid.<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Her father\u2019s toolbox.<\/p>\n<p>She knelt beside it.<\/p>\n<p>The latch was unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, beneath screwdrivers and rusted wrenches, lay a cassette recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Next to it was a tape labeled:<\/p>\n<p>AUGUST 17 \u2014 EVELYN \/ THOMAS \/ ROBERT<\/p>\n<p>Mara pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>Static filled the unit.<\/p>\n<p>Then her mother\u2019s younger voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot tell him the child is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>A man answered.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deserves to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Robert Bell spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. My son deserves to know who his father is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara\u2019s hand slipped from the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>My son.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued spinning.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10860\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: A Thirty-Seven-Year-Old Recording Changed Daniel\u2019s Place in the Family, but the Voice at the End Made Mara Question Her Own<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mara did not open the door.
