looking at the wrong coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant says Victor was Arthur\u2019s son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Victor know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett was already requesting the probate filing.<\/p>\n<p>It arrived minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Attached was a birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Victor James Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Mother: Margaret Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Father: Arthur Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>An amendment recorded when Victor was five changed his surname to Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at the document.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn sat slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Their father had another child.<\/p>\n<p>Their half brother had been standing beside them for decades.<\/p>\n<p>And Victor had never said a word.<\/p>\n<p>I walked into the adjoining room.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked up.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the birth certificate on the table.<\/p>\n<p>His face told me everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane appeared behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor did not look at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She slapped him.<\/p>\n<p>Harder than Elena had slapped Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let us think you were Dad\u2019s business associate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were our brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched Grant take our property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor finally looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Arthur refused to acknowledge me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stopped.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s favorite raw material.<\/p>\n<p>Not greed alone.<\/p>\n<p>A wound.<\/p>\n<p>A grievance.<\/p>\n<p>Something true enough to build a betrayal around.<\/p>\n<p>Victor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid for my schooling. Gave me work. Introduced me as a family friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut never as his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you helped Grant punish him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told myself the property should have been mine too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s expression was colder than anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at the birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegally, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur\u2019s private agreement specifically identifies all three children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett held up the newly examined final page.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had not excluded Victor.<\/p>\n<p>He had created a separate trust interest for him.<\/p>\n<p>Victor went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty percent of the restitution assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left me something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll this time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor covered his face.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had convinced him he had been disinherited.<\/p>\n<p>Another lie built around a real injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Not theatrically.<\/p>\n<p>Like a man realizing that twenty-seven years of resentment had been aimed at a dead father who had failed him emotionally but had not erased him financially.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bennett continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor laughed bitterly through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou receive it only if you disclose every transaction you helped Grant create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had known his son.<\/p>\n<p>Known his anger.<\/p>\n<p>Known his weakness.<\/p>\n<p>And built the inheritance around the one act that could undo the damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything?\u201d Victor whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked through the glass toward Diane and Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may still face prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I confess and possibly go to prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lose the trust interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at the birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I thought he might choose the money.<\/p>\n<p>Then he pushed it away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care about the inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cared for twenty-seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet the investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor wiped his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I know where Grant keeps the original Halcyon claim ledgers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the building Daniel bought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fire property.<\/p>\n<p>Elena went still.<\/p>\n<p>Victor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel found copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the originals?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an old records vault beneath the basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe building burned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the vault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Grant know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why leave them there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s answer chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the building is scheduled for demolition tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10831\">Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Beneath the Burned Building We Found Grant\u2019s Original Ledgers, but the Vault Also Contained Evidence My Father Had Never Intended Me to Discover<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The police returned to my house with me.
