night?”

“Yes.”

The word barely came out.

“Why?”

“I called him.”

“For what?”

“My father discovered the transfers.”

My pulse hammered.

“And?”

“He threatened to call the police.”

“What happened?”

“I went to his house to explain.”

“With Victor.”

“Yes.”

“And your father died.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Diane began crying.

Not loudly.

A small, strangled sound.

“He fell down the basement stairs.”

I stared at Victor on the screen.

“Did he fall?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were there.”

“I was upstairs.”

“And Victor?”

Another silence.

“Diane.”

“He was with my father.”

The front doorbell stopped ringing.

Victor stepped back.

For a moment I thought he was leaving.

Instead he placed the envelope on the porch.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

He raised one finger and pointed toward the envelope.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

The first page is your father’s letter to me.

The second is Daniel’s agreement.

The third explains why your land must be sold before October 1.

I looked at the calendar on the kitchen wall.

September 15.

Sixteen days.

Victor walked away.

I waited until his car disappeared before opening the door.

The envelope was thick.

Inside were dozens of pages.

On top was a letter written in handwriting I recognized immediately.

My father’s.

Victor,

If Claire ever becomes the target of the same arrangement you helped build around the Mercers, you will tell her everything.

You will not decide what she can handle.

You will not protect Daniel, Diane, or yourself.

She gets the truth.

I sat down on the porch.

My father had known Victor.

Not merely as his business partner.

He had known what Victor had done to the Mercer family.

And somehow Daniel had entered into an agreement with the same man.

I turned to the second document.

At the top were the words CONFIDENTIAL REPAYMENT AND ASSET COOPERATION AGREEMENT.

Daniel’s signature appeared at the bottom.

The date was eleven months earlier.

The amount listed beside repayment obligation made my hands begin to shake.

$612,000.

Daniel owed Victor more than half a million dollars.

Below that, under collateral pathway, were three words.

Hale Trust Property.

The land my father had left me.

I turned to the third page.

It was not a contract.

It was a development notice.

At the bottom, highlighted in yellow, was a deadline.

OCTOBER 1.

If the land changed ownership before that date, the buyer would receive eligibility for a regional development compensation program.

Estimated additional value:

$3.2 million.

Suddenly the eight-million-dollar offer made sense.

Someone was trying to buy my land before October 1 because after the transfer, it could be worth millions more.

The scheme was larger than the hidden bank transfers.

Larger than the forged signatures.

Larger than Daniel’s debt.

Someone had spent nearly a year positioning my marriage, my finances, and even my home around one deadline.

Sixteen days away.

My phone rang again.

Daniel.

This time, I answered.

“Where are you?”

His voice was strained.

“With Victor.”

I looked toward the road where Victor’s car had disappeared.

“What?”

“I’m at his office.”

“Victor was just at my house.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made every other discovery of the day feel small.

“Claire, that wasn’t Victor.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Man on My Porch Wasn’t Victor, and the First Lie He Told Me
