At its center hung a brass padlock.

For several seconds, I simply stared.

Behind me, my mother-in-law, Diane Mercer, calmly stirred sugar into her coffee.

“You’re up early,” she said.

I turned toward her. “Why is there a lock on my refrigerator?”

Diane lifted the spoon from her cup and tapped it twice against the rim.

“You kept taking things without asking.”

I thought I had misheard her.

“This is my refrigerator.”

She gave me the patient smile she used whenever she wanted to make someone feel childish.

“It belongs to the household, Claire.”

“No. It belongs to me and Daniel.”

“Exactly. The household.”

I looked again at the chain.

Two weeks earlier, Diane had come to stay with us after announcing that the plumbing in her condo needed major repairs. She had arrived with three suitcases, six boxes, a ceramic angel she insisted had to sit beside the television, and no clear departure date.

Daniel had said it would only be temporary.

“Mom shouldn’t have to stay in a hotel,” he had told me.

I agreed.

That was before she reorganized my pantry.

Before she replaced the towels in the downstairs bathroom because mine were “too thin.”

Before she began moving my mail from the entry table into a drawer she called the correspondence station.

And before she started keeping a notebook beside the microwave.

The notebook was open now.

I walked toward it.

Across the page, Diane had written a list in neat blue ink.

MILK — $4.79.

BERRIES — $6.50.

CHICKEN — $12.34.

WINE — unnecessary.

My stomach tightened.

“What is this?”

“Expenses.”

“Our expenses?”

“Household expenses.”

I flipped back a page.

There were columns.

Food.

Utilities.

Gasoline.

Mortgage.

Insurance.

Beside several items she had written Daniel pays.

Beside others, Claire uses.

I looked up.

“You went through our bills?”

“They were sitting in the office.”

“They were inside a drawer.”

“The drawer wasn’t locked.”

Her eyes moved briefly toward the refrigerator.

I understood the point she was making.

“You need to take that chain off.”

“I’m not doing that.”

“Diane.”

“You waste food.”

“I live here.”

“So does my son.”

The kitchen felt suddenly smaller.

Diane picked up her mug.

“Daniel works extremely hard. There is no reason he should come home and discover that food he purchased has disappeared.”

I stared at her.

“I bought most of what’s in that refrigerator.”

She shrugged.

“Then you should have receipts.”

The absurdity of the sentence stunned me more than the lock.

For nine years, Daniel and I had lived in this house.

I had chosen the pale green kitchen cabinets.

I had planted rosemary outside the back door.

I had spent three weekends stripping old wallpaper from the dining room while Daniel painted the ceiling.

We had argued about countertops, laughed about plumbing disasters, hosted birthdays, burned Thanksgiving rolls, and sat at that kitchen courage.

Just a quiet realization.

Diane was not behaving like a guest.

She was behaving like an owner.

“Where is the key?”

“With me.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

I studied her face.

She seemed completely certain that I would back down.

That certainty bothered me more than the lock itself.

I walked to the garage.

Behind Daniel’s workbench was a red toolbox.

I carried it into the kitchen and placed it on the counter.

Diane frowned.

“What are you doing?”

I opened the box.

Inside lay wire cutters, pliers, screwdrivers, and a small bolt cutter Daniel had once behaving irrationally.”

“Last chance.”

“This is exactly the kind of impulsiveness Daniel worries about.”

My hand stopped.

“What did you say?”

She looked away too quickly.

It was small.

Barely noticeable.

But I saw it.

“What does Daniel worry about?”

“Nothing.”

“You just said—”

“I said you’re impulsive.”

“No. You said Daniel worries about it.”

Diane folded her arms.

“You should speak to your husband.”

The words landed harder than they should have.

I positioned the cutter around one link of the chain.

Diane moved toward me.

“Do not damage my property.”

I looked at her.

“Your property?”

She went still.

I squeezed.

The chain snapped with a sharp metallic crack.

One side fell against the refrigerator door.

The other slid to the floor.

Diane’s face lost its carefully controlled expression.

“You had no right.”

I opened the refrigerator.

Inside, several shelves had been rearranged.

Clear plastic containers filled the top shelf.

Each had a white label.

DANIEL.

DIANE.

GUESTS.

On the bottom shelf were three items grouped together.

My yogurt.

A container of leftover pasta.

Half a carton of eggs.

A label beneath them read CLAIRE.

I felt heat climb my neck.

Then I noticed something else.

A small brown envelope was tucked behind a carton of orange juice.

I reached for it.

Diane moved fast.

“Leave that.”

I pulled the envelope out.

Her coffee cup struck the counter.

“Claire.”

There was no name written on the envelope.

Only a number.

7426.

“What is this?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a document.

The heading read PROPERTY TRANSFER PREPARATION CHECKLIST.

My address appeared beneath it.

For a moment, I could hear nothing except the hum of the refrigerator.

I read the address again.

Our address.

My house.

I scanned downward.

Owner verification.

Mortgage balance.

Appraisal requirement.

Potential transfer structure.

At the bottom, someone had handwritten two names.

Daniel Mercer.

Diane Mercer.

Mine was nowhere on the page.

I looked up.

Diane’s face had gone pale.

“What is this?”

She reached for the paper.

I stepped back.

“Give that to me.”

“You were preparing to transfer my house?”

“It is not what you think.”

“That sentence usually means it is exactly what I think.”

Her mouth tightened.

“This is a preliminary document.”

“For what?”

“You need to speak with Daniel.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because this involves him.”

I stared at her.

“How phone lay beside the fruit bowl.

I picked it up.

Daniel’s contact appeared at the top of my favorites.

I pressed call.

He answered after four rings.

“Hey.”

His voice sounded rushed.

“Did you know your mother put a padlock on our refrigerator?”

Silence.

Not again.

The account had been created eight months earlier.

Authorized contact: Daniel Mercer.

Secondary contact: Diane Mercer.

I felt cold now.

Not lower.

Another transfer appeared.

Seventy-five thousand dollars.

My breath caught.

That transfer had been made six days earlier.

Diane finally
