saying it now.”

Detective Lewis took possession of the drive.

By evening, his forensic team had opened it.

The files went back years.

Secret accounts.

Shell companies.

Insurance fraud.

Property schemes.

Bribery.

Threats.

Recordings.

Video.

Names nobody had connected to Irving.

Lewis stared at the screen.

“This doesn’t only destroy Palmer.”

He scrolled through another directory.

“It may expose everyone who helped him.”

Three days later, news stations across Missouri and Kansas were reporting the kidnapping and attempted murder of a prominent freight executive.

But the public still did not know everything.

Neither did the police.

While recovering Wyatt’s cloud backups, I remembered what he had told me in the basement.

He had started secretly recording conversations eight months earlier.

One file remained.

I found it buried among dozens of ordinary business recordings.

The date was months before the attack.

I brought it to Detective Lewis.

He pressed play.

Sabrina spoke first.

Then Irving.

And then a third voice entered the conversation.

Lewis stopped the recording.

He replayed it.

His expression changed.

“Who is that?”

I knew the name.

Victor Harlan.

A financial consultant who had advised some of the largest companies in the region.

Lewis listened to the entire conversation without interrupting.

When it ended, he sat perfectly still.

For the first time since I had met him, the detective looked genuinely unsettled.

He turned toward me.

“Mr. Yates.”

“What?”

He looked at the computer.

Then at Wyatt sleeping beyond the glass.

“We need to determine exactly what this man knew.”

I understood.

Saving Wyatt had ended the immediate danger.

But the truth behind what happened in that basement was still unfolding.

And before Sabrina and Irving ever reached a courtroom, we had one more question to answer.

Had Victor Harlan helped create their plan—or had Wyatt’s secret recording captured the moment he tried to stop it?

<a
