The other wore a leather glove on one hand.<\/p>\n<p>Paid muscle.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina stopped several steps above the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered how long you\u2019d stay behind those shelves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped into view.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt looked sick with fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave him a slight shake of my head.<\/p>\n<p>Do not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Irving folded his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew someone used the maintenance entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina raised her phone.<\/p>\n<p>On its screen was security footage.<\/p>\n<p>Me entering the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Me approaching Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>Me hiding.<\/p>\n<p>Me holding my phone toward Irving.<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe remodel included cameras Wyatt never bothered to notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tapped the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI control the recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another touch.<\/p>\n<p>The footage disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour evidence is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put my own phone into my coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re assuming that was the only place evidence went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The confidence in her face shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Barely.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina recovered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake his phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man approached.<\/p>\n<p>I remained still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have children?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Irving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters because you still have time to decide whether they visit you at home or through prison glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving snapped, \u201cDon\u2019t listen to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man grabbed my coat.<\/p>\n<p>He was younger, heavier, and considerably stronger.<\/p>\n<p>So I did not fight his strength.<\/p>\n<p>When he pulled me toward him, I stepped forward instead of back.<\/p>\n<p>His balance shifted.<\/p>\n<p>I turned my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>His momentum carried him into the shelving.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes crashed down.<\/p>\n<p>Glass shattered across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The second man rushed me.<\/p>\n<p>Then the mechanical-room door slammed inward with enough force to tear the latch from the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>Three figures entered.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Mercer came first.<\/p>\n<p>Silver hair.<\/p>\n<p>Crooked nose.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy winter coat.<\/p>\n<p>At seventy-one, Frank still moved like the Army Ranger he had once been.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry, Abe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took your time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind him came Denise Cole and Marcus Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Denise had spent years as a homicide detective before leaving the department after exposing corruption among senior officers. Marcus was a former Marine and one of the best mechanics Heartland had ever employed.<\/p>\n<p>More important than their r\u00e9sum\u00e9s was something simpler.<\/p>\n<p>I trusted them.<\/p>\n<p>Irving stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is your rescue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>The amusement disappeared from his face.<\/p>\n<p>He saw the chain.<\/p>\n<p>The needle marks.<\/p>\n<p>The destroyed knee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank turned toward Irving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise opened her coat enough to reveal a body camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecording since before we entered the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus immediately crossed to Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>He examined the chain and then the ankle restraint.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been tightened into the joint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt nodded weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey kept adjusting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re trespassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdd it to the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat,\u201d Frank said, \u201cis unlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina looked from one face to another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think four old men and a retired detective are going to frighten me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise smiled without warmth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not retired from noticing crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>It was time.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina had built her entire plan around one assumption.<\/p>\n<p>Heartland Freight belonged to Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>She believed forcing his signature would give her control.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much do you think Heartland is worth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of millions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you believe Wyatt owns it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Even he was uncertain where I was going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The basement became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Irving frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWyatt runs Heartland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has managed it better than I ever could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I faced Sabrina again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut management and ownership are different things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou transferred it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI transferred operational authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier, Eleanor and I had created a family trust designed to protect the company from exactly the kind of situation now unfolding.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt knew portions of the arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know every clause.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody outside our lawyers did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never surrendered controlling ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>Irving stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe board knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached slowly into my coat.<\/p>\n<p>Both hired men tensed.<\/p>\n<p>I removed a waterproof document envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a certified summary of the trust structure.<\/p>\n<p>I carried it because Eleanor had once told me that complicated protections were useless if nobody could prove they existed when trouble arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust requires two approvals for any sale of Heartland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine and his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf either Wyatt or I dies under circumstances that trigger the trust\u2019s protective clause, controlling assets do not pass to a surviving spouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey transfer to the Eleanor Yates Foundation until an independent investigation is completed. Under certain conditions, the transfer becomes permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>Irving did too.<\/p>\n<p>Months of planning had just collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>The signatures they tortured Wyatt to obtain could not give them Heartland.<\/p>\n<p>Killing him would not give them Heartland.<\/p>\n<p>Killing me would not give them Heartland.<\/p>\n<p>Killing both of us would remove the company from their reach entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made that up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Eleanor\u2019s idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced even Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>His mother had distrusted concentrated wealth. She believed money could turn ordinary disagreements into wars.<\/p>\n<p>She had insisted Heartland never become a prize someone could obtain through marriage, coercion, or death.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had thought she was being excessively cautious.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in that basement, I wished she were alive so I could tell her she had been right.<\/p>\n<p>Irving suddenly looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect us to believe\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care what you believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou imprisoned my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou drugged him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou crushed his knee because you wanted signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hired men exchanged a glance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you planned to kill him tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man wearing the glove turned sharply toward Irving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving\u2019s head snapped around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said we were here for security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s manipulating you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded toward Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that look like security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man stared at the chain.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, uncertainty replaced aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>People hired to intimidate were dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>People who realized they had been hired as accessories to murder were unpredictable in a different direction.<\/p>\n<p>Frank saw the same shift.<\/p>\n<p>He remained near the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Denise kept recording.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stayed beside Wyatt.<\/p>\n<p>Irving was losing control of the room.<\/p>\n<p>Then he made the mistake desperate men often make.<\/p>\n<p>He talked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boy could have signed days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gloved man stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did that to his knee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving realized too late what he had admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s the one who caused this. He hid the ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost admired the absurdity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo your defense is that I forced you to torture my son by keeping my own company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth closed.<\/p>\n<p>Above us, the party continued.<\/p>\n<p>Music shook the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>People laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Someone began announcing that midnight was approaching.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe less.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sabrina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned to kill Wyatt when everyone upstairs was celebrating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFireworks outside. Music inside. Drunk witnesses remembering whatever you told them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t prove that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise touched her body camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>That was when a faint sound reached us from outside.<\/p>\n<p>A siren.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Irving heard it.<\/p>\n<p>So did Sabrina.<\/p>\n<p>Blue light flickered through the small basement window.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer confused her.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>The recorder was still running.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent an emergency signal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sirens multiplied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my friends brought the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, the countdown began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guests shouted together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina stared toward the basement window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irving looked at the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two hired men moved away from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus placed one hand protectively on Wyatt\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank stood between Irving and the exit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise\u2019s camera continued recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my son.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly a week, he had been chained beneath his own home while his wife prepared to murder him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fireworks erupted over Springfield.<\/p>\n<p>The sky outside flashed white.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, people cheered.<\/p>\n<p>And downstairs, Sabrina Palmer finally understood that the new year had begun with police surrounding her house.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10779\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When Police Entered the Party, Sabrina and Irving Turned on Each Other\u2014and One Final Attack Nearly Cost Wyatt Everything<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The darkness lasted only a few seconds, but it gave me enough time to understand the situation.
