offered me $2.4 million.

Then five.

Then seven and a half.

Not because they were discovering the value.

Because they were testing how cheaply they could obtain it.

At the bottom of the file was a final document.

A draft option agreement.

Harold had never signed it.

Cardinal would have received broad control for a fraction of the projected value.

Across the first page Harold had written:

THEY THINK I’M DYING SO I’LL PANIC.

THEY’RE WRONG.

Below that, in later handwriting, he had added:

IF THEY TRY THE SAME THING WITH DOREEN, SHOW HER PAGE 73.

Evelyn turned to page 73.

It contained a map.

One narrow underground access zone had been highlighted.

The zone extended from my parcel into an adjacent tract.

The adjacent tract belonged to the county.

And beneath the map was a note stating that without control of Parcel 44-118, Cardinal’s preferred storage design was commercially impractical.

I looked at Evelyn.

“So they really cannot do it without me.”

“Not the version they planned.”

“What is that worth?”

“More than seven and a half million.”

“How much?”

She closed the report.

“That depends on how badly they need Stonebridge.”

My phone rang.

Daniel Mercer.

I answered.

“Mrs. Vance.”

“Yes?”

“We understand you have obtained certain confidential project materials.”

I looked around the ruined farmhouse.

“How would you know what I obtained?”

His silence answered.

Then he said, “We need to resolve this before misunderstandings create unnecessary consequences.”

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

“Good.”

I looked at page 73.

“Because I just learned something interesting.”

He said nothing.

I continued.

“Stonebridge.”

The silence became absolute.

Then Daniel asked, very quietly, “Where did you hear that name?”

I smiled.

“Page seventy-three.”

And for the first time, he hung up on me.

<a
