anymore.”

She nodded slowly.

Then she looked toward the courthouse.

“What happens now?”

The question surprised me.

“Now?”

“With everything.”

“The foundation.”

“The house.”

“Dad’s files.”

“Our things.”

That was enough.

Vanessa hugged me.

It was not graceful.

Neither of us seemed certain where our arms belonged.

But it happened.

Then she stepped away.

“Do not tell Martin.”

“He’ll find out.”

“How?”

“Graham is watching from behind that the bank.

The brass key Russell had left in the wooden box rested in my palm.

The same key that opened the safe-deposit box.

The same box that started the legal fight.

I signed the access papers.

The bank employee led me into the private room.

Inside the box remained copies of Russell’s documents.

Medical evaluations.

Financial records.

The earlier will.

Letters.

Evidence.

I looked through them one final time.

They had protected me.

They had protected Russell’s right to choose.

But I no longer needed to carry the key.

I closed the box.

At the counter, I returned it.

The employee looked surprised.

“You don’t want to retain access?”

“No.”

“Would you like the contents transferred?”

“Edmund has the necessary truth.

It had not.

No key could do that.

Truth had come from letters, arguments, courtrooms, ledgers, photographs, confessions, mistakes, and people finally saying what they should have said years earlier.

Outside, I stood on the sidewalk.

My pocket felt strangely empty.

My phone rang.

Thomas.

I answered.

“Hello?”

“Elise.”

He sounded nervous.

“I wanted to ask you something.”

“What?”

“I’m was no hearing ahead.

No deposition.

No hidden document demanding immediate attention.

No courtroom waiting to decide who he had been.

The fight was finished.

That evening, I entered the house and stopped beside the hallway bench.

Russell’s shoes remained beneath it.

I remembered his letter.

Eventually, move the shoes.

I crouched.

Touched one.

Then the other.

I was not ready.

But for the first time, I believed eventually might actually come.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: With the Lawsuit Finished and Russell’s Secrets Finally Settled, Elise
