say?”

Ortiz paused.

“Kessler says he never knew who his source inside Whitmore was.”

“Then how does that help?”

“He used an intermediary.”

“Who?”

“We have a name.”

I looked at the photograph of young Peter Sloan.

Ortiz continued.

“The intermediary was Peter Sloan.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Confirmation should have felt satisfying.

It did not.

Peter had been inside Russell’s life for years.

Russell had trusted him enough to make him CFO.

Or perhaps Russell had eventually stopped trusting him and kept him close precisely because of that.

“Where is Peter?” I asked.

“We don’t know.”

“When was he last seen?”

“This morning.”

My skin prickled.

“Where?”

“At a private airfield.”

Thomas swore.

Ortiz continued.

“He did not board the aircraft.”

“Then where did he go?”

“We are working on that.”

Helen suddenly turned toward me.

Her face had gone pale.

“Elise.”

“What?”

“Your house.”

I stared at her.

“What about it?”

“Russell’s study.”

Vanessa understood.

“The original files.”

Helen shook her head.

“Not files.”

She looked at me.

“Caroline’s journals.”

I had seen them.

A row of leather notebooks on the upper shelf.

Russell never touched them in front of me.

“What’s in them?”

Helen’s voice dropped.

“Everything Caroline learned before she died.”

I was already reaching for my keys.

Ortiz heard.

“Mrs. Whitmore, do not go home.”

“It’s my house.”

“We have agents en route.”

“How long?”

“Approximately twenty minutes.”

I thought of the study window.

The side entrance.

The alarm Russell frequently forgot to activate because he hated entering codes.

Then I remembered something else.

The security company had called me that morning.

A fault.

One sensor offline.

I had dismissed it as another maintenance problem.

My stomach turned.

“Someone may already be there.”

Ortiz’s voice sharpened.

“Do not approach the residence.”

Vanessa grabbed my arm before I could move.

“She’s right.”

I looked at her.

For once, I did not fight.

We waited.

Those twenty minutes were longer than the estate hearing.

At seventeen minutes, Ortiz called.

Agents had entered the house.

No Peter.

No intruder.

No immediate threat.

I exhaled.

Then she added:

“The study has been searched.”

My heart sank.

“Caroline’s journals?”

“Several shelves are empty.”

Helen covered her mouth.

“How many?”

Ortiz did not know.

I did.

I had dusted those shelves.

Seven leather journals.

I pictured them.

Brown.

Green.

Two black.

Three red.

“Seven.”

Ortiz spoke to someone in the background.

Then returned.

“We recovered six.”

I stared at Helen.

“One is missing.”

“Which?”

I knew that too.

The journals had years embossed on their spines.

The missing one was the final red volume.

Caroline’s last year.

The year she met Thomas.

The year she began investigating the hospital billing network.

The year she wrote about an unnamed daughter crying in a restroom.

Me.

Peter had not needed every record.

He needed one.

And somewhere inside Caroline’s final journal was apparently something a man had spent decades trying to keep buried.

<a
