they were.”

“Why?”

“Because someone had been watching Warren Holdings.”

I thought of Russell’s meticulous records.

His secrecy.

The strange layers of legal protection.

“What did he discover?”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“Someone inside Russell’s own business network had been feeding them information.”

My mouth went dry.

“Who?”

“We never proved it.”

“Then why are you telling me now?”

“Because Russell believed the estate challenge would force whoever it was to move.”

I stared at him.

“You’re saying the lawsuit was part of his plan?”

“No. He hoped Vanessa and Martin would not file.”

“But he prepared for it.”

“Yes.”

“And if they did?”

Thomas met my eyes.

“He believed the financial disclosures would expose the person who had been hiding inside his companies for years.”

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

Her voice came fast.

“Elise, where are you?”

“With Thomas.”

A stunned pause.

“You found him?”

“Yes.”

“We have a problem.”

I looked at my father.

“What?”

“Martin went back through the transfer records.”

“And?”

“There’s another account.”

My stomach tightened.

“Whose?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

“Why?”

“Because someone accessed it this morning.”

I glanced at Thomas.

He had gone still.

Vanessa continued.

“Nearly eight million dollars was moved out.”

“When?”

“Forty minutes ago.”

“To where?”

“We don’t know.”

Thomas stood.

The color had left his face.

“What?” I asked him.

He reached for the binder.

“Elise, ask her which account.”

I repeated the question.

Vanessa gave me the final four digits.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“What is it?”

“That account was the reserve.”

“For what?”

His voice dropped.

“Evidence.”

The money was not the important thing.

The account existed to identify anyone who tried to access funds linked to the old medical-debt network.

Russell had left it untouched deliberately.

A marker.

A trap.

And someone had just stepped into it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Eight-Million-Dollar Transfer Activated Russell’s Oldest Trap and Pointed
