sharpened.

“We did.”

Helen nodded.

“I expected that.”

Vanessa blinked.

“Then what’s the test?”

“There isn’t one.”

Silence.

“You were required to come because of money,” Helen said. “Russell understood his children.”

Martin almost smiled.

“The question is why you stayed after you heard what you heard.”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Nobody moved.

Helen opened her notebook again.

“I have one final question for each of you.”

She looked first at Vanessa.

“If the restoration provision vanished this second and there were no money nodded.

Martin swallowed.

“I want to know whether Dad ever thought I could do something without him.”

Graham looked toward Russell’s chair.

“I want one more conversation.”

His voice broke.

“I know I can’t have it.”

Helen closed the notebook.

Then she looked at me.

“Elise?”

“I’m not part of the inheritance condition.”

“No.”

“But you are part of the family.”

I almost rejected the word automatically.

Family.

For years it had been used as a weapon against me.

You are not family.

His real family.

His children.

His blood.

Now Helen offered it without demand.

I looked around at Russell’s children.

Vanessa’s swollen eyes.

Martin’s shaking hands.

Graham holding his father’s letter.

“I want the fighting to stop.”

Vanessa looked at me.

I continued.

“Not because Russell asked us to.
