My children may say worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know how we began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what we became.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat must be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t feel like enough when you\u2019re gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why I have taken precautions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat precautions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will get exactly what you deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The one from our engagement dinner.<\/p>\n<p>This time, there was no Vanessa nearby to hear it.<\/p>\n<p>Only me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell leaned back, exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks later, he was admitted to the hospital again.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors stopped speaking about treatment.<\/p>\n<p>They began speaking about comfort.<\/p>\n<p>The day before he died, he asked me to bring the blue blanket from home.<\/p>\n<p>I drove back through cold rain, carried it upstairs, and found one of his old sweaters lying across our bed.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed it against my face.<\/p>\n<p>It smelled faintly of cedar and him.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the diagnosis, I screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody heard.<\/p>\n<p>Then I washed my face, folded the blanket, and returned to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Russell was barely awake.<\/p>\n<p>I covered him.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took his hand.<\/p>\n<p>He struggled for another breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faint smile touched his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave them there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began crying.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>He had always known how long it took me to believe I belonged in his house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His fingers tightened weakly around mine.<\/p>\n<p>Then he slept.<\/p>\n<p>Russell Whitmore died the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>And before the flowers from his funeral had begun to wilt, his children and I were sitting in Edmund Vale\u2019s office waiting to discover what Russell believed each of us deserved.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10522\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: After the Funeral, Russell\u2019s Lawyer Placed a Wooden Box Before Me and Let His Children Believe My Humiliation Had Finally Arrived<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marriage changed my address before it changed anything inside me.
