It doesn\u2019t erase consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I hate her less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s allowed too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m generous that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Alyssa said, \u201cAaron was my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Dad\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Dad helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith your money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was learning.<\/p>\n<p>So was I.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Mr. Bennett called.<\/p>\n<p>He had completed the medical-account review.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the Aaron-related money had eventually been restored.<\/p>\n<p>One final withdrawal had not.<\/p>\n<p>It occurred after Aaron died.<\/p>\n<p>That made no sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett told me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA private account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Dad transfer money from my trust to Mom after Aaron died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called her.<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad send you money when I was seventeen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She named the same amount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom breathed slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me it was yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it was money for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help me prepare a place for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had been planning something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight before Vivian\u2019s overdose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The timeline snapped into focus.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had finally decided to tell me everything.<\/p>\n<p>He planned to leave Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>He sent Mom money.<\/p>\n<p>My money.<\/p>\n<p>So she could prepare for me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he think I was moving to Arizona?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted you to have the option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The option.<\/p>\n<p>Finally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never spent it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you never came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to return it after William changed the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep it for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it still there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invested it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor thirty years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told me.<\/p>\n<p>The amount stunned me.<\/p>\n<p>Far more than the original transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had preserved it.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Dad ordered her to.<\/p>\n<p>Because she believed it belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to give it back,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll talk about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the call, I phoned Mr. Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>He was silent when I explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat resolves the discrepancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the trust is whole?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially, once those funds are accounted for, effectively yes. Possibly more than whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had spent years repairing what had been taken.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had protected the final piece.<\/p>\n<p>The estate would add more.<\/p>\n<p>Money, strangely, was becoming the easiest part of the story.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers could be restored.<\/p>\n<p>Interest calculated.<\/p>\n<p>Assets transferred.<\/p>\n<p>Childhood could not.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bennett said, \u201cThere is another issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile reviewing William\u2019s trust amendments, I found an instruction he added shortly before his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instruction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt concerns the final distribution of the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the percentages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a condition attached to a separate property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lake house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s parents owned a small house near Lake Erie.<\/p>\n<p>We went there when I was little.<\/p>\n<p>Fishing.<\/p>\n<p>Cold mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Dad teaching me to skip stones.<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed it was sold years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe still owned it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gets it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the unusual part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam did not leave it to you or Alyssa individually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe condition is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat condition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must visit it together before deciding whether to keep or sell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s legally enforceable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly in the emotional sense.
