child. I did not ask him to sacrifice Candace. I did not ask him to cover up your theft. I did not ask him to stay married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose were adult decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian lowered her head.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will take responsibility for what I did to Candace when I was old enough to know better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I am done taking responsibility for what all of you did in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me loosened.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>She was finally separating herself from the role assigned to her.<\/p>\n<p>The favored daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The excuse.<\/p>\n<p>The shield.<\/p>\n<p>After Vivian left, Alyssa and I remained at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently that\u2019s fast in this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed weakly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mr. Bennett called.<\/p>\n<p>He had received another document from Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>A scanned letter Daniel wrote shortly before his death.<\/p>\n<p>It concerned Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>But not her education.<\/p>\n<p>Her parentage.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Rachel\u2019s mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett said, \u201cDaniel\u2019s wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what\u2019s the issue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe letter claims Daniel was not Rachel\u2019s biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stared.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed at the recurring theme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose was she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed William might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa whispered it first.<\/p>\n<p>I took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel referenced an affair between William and his wife before Rachel was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind rejected it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and Daniel\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p>Another secret.<\/p>\n<p>Another possible daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe letter says Daniel confronted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam denied the affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief.<\/p>\n<p>Brief.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he agreed to pay Rachel\u2019s educational expenses anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the trust records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he do that if she wasn\u2019t his?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>A paternity claim.<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Only this time Dad stood on the opposite side.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa whispered, \u201cWe need to find Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because if Daniel had spent years blackmailing Dad over a child he claimed belonged to him, then the money taken from my trust might have been covering something far more complicated than Vivian\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p>And if Rachel truly was Dad\u2019s biological daughter, the DNA test that began with Alyssa trying to remove me from the Harper family might be about to reveal another sister none of us knew existed.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10485\">Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Rachel Agreed to Meet Us After Learning Dad Had Paid for Her Education, but Her Mother\u2019s Letter Turned Daniel\u2019s Paternity Claim Upside Down<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Horizon Educational Holdings did not exist anymore.
