downstairs.”

“Yes.”

“You took enough medication to put yourself in the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“And after that, he know?”

“Eventually.”

“Did that bring him home?”

“No.”

“What did?”

Thomas hesitated.

“The secret wasn’t the affair.”

Alyssa gripped the phone.

“Then what?”

Thomas said something so unexpected that for several seconds none of us responded.

“Daniel claimed he had proof Vivian had been lying about more than paternity and Evelyn.”

“What proof?”

“I never saw it.”

“What did he say it concerned?”

Thomas’s voice lowered.

“William’s money.”

I looked toward Dad’s study.

“What money?”

“Accounts.”

“What kind of accounts?”

“I don’t know.”

Alyssa asked, “Did Mom steal from Dad?”

Thomas hesitated.

“I don’t know whether William ever proved theft.”

“But?”

“But Daniel believed Vivian had been moving money for years.”

I thought about Dad’s estate.

The revised will.

The sealed folders.

The safe-deposit box.

His insistence that no distribution occur until the DNA dispute was resolved.

Perhaps that caution had not been only about daughters.

“What happened to Daniel?”

Thomas went silent again.

“Thomas?”

“He died.”

“When?”

“Fifteen years ago.”

“How?”

“Car accident.”

The answer felt ordinary.

Maybe it was.

Then Thomas added, “But before he died, he gave William a folder.”

My pulse quickened.

“What was in it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is it?”

“I assumed William kept it.”

Alyssa and I looked toward the walnut desk.

We had searched it.

Or thought we had.

Thomas continued.

“Daniel told me William would know what to do if Vivian ever tried to rewrite the family history.”

The phrase struck hard.

Rewrite the family history.

That was exactly what she had done.

After the call ended, Alyssa and I entered Dad’s study.

We searched every drawer again.

Nothing.

Then I remembered how I had found Dad’s final letter.

Behind the bottom drawer.

I removed it.

The cavity looked empty.

Alyssa crouched beside me.

“Wait.”

She ran her fingers along the back panel.

A faint seam crossed the wood.

We pressed.

Nothing.

Then she pushed upward.

A narrow wooden panel shifted.

Behind it was a compartment.

Inside sat a thin brown folder.

On the front, in Dad’s handwriting, were four words.

Daniel Mercer — Original Records.

Alyssa looked at me.

I opened it.

The first page was a bank statement.

The second was a transfer record.

The third bore Vivian’s signature.

I read the destination account.

Then looked again.

It was not in Vivian’s name.

It was in Alyssa’s.

My sister stared.

“I was twelve.”

I turned the next page.

Another transfer.

Then another.

Thousands of dollars moved from Dad’s private accounts into a custodial structure linked to Alyssa.

At first glance, it looked like a parent saving for a child.

Then I saw the withdrawal records.

Money had been removed almost immediately.

The authorized signer was Vivian.

Alyssa whispered, “Mom was using an account in my name.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

We turned the page.

A cashier’s check.

Payable to Daniel Mercer.

Then another.

And another.

The amounts increased.

This was not an affair alone.

It looked like payment.

“Blackmail?” Alyssa whispered.

I did not answer.

At the bottom of the folder was a handwritten note from Daniel to Dad.

William,

If you are reading this, Vivian has probably told you I was extorting her. That is only partly true.

I stopped.

Alyssa leaned closer.

I continued.

Daniel admitted taking money.

Then he wrote that Vivian originally paid him for something else.

Not silence about their affair.

Information.

He had been hired to find someone.

A woman.

The next line contained the name.

Evelyn Harper.

My mother.

Alyssa gasped.

I read on.

Years earlier, Vivian had paid Daniel to follow Mom.

To photograph her.

To document meetings.

To find evidence that could be used against her.

The photograph outside the recovery center had come from Daniel.

Not Vivian.

My hands went cold.

Daniel wrote that he eventually realized Vivian was misrepresenting what he found.

He knew Evelyn was sober.

He knew the clinic was a support center.

He confronted Vivian.

She paid him to remain quiet.

Later, during Dad’s separation from Vivian, Daniel resumed contact with her.

The affair began then.

But Daniel kept records.

And eventually, guilt—or self-preservation—made him give copies to Dad.

I turned the final page.

There was one last paragraph.

Something Daniel discovered while following Evelyn.

Something he believed William never knew.

I read the line twice.

Then looked at Alyssa.

“What?”

I could barely speak.

“Mom wasn’t the only person Daniel followed.”

“Who else?”

I handed her the page.

Her eyes moved across the sentence.

Then widened.

Daniel had also been instructed to follow me.

Not as an adult.

As a teenager.

For almost two years.

And according to his records, Vivian had received photographs, school schedules, copies of letters, and reports about every person I met.

The woman who spent my childhood pretending I did not belong had been secretly documenting almost every movement I made.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Daniel’s Surveillance Reports Showed Vivian Had Watched Me for Years, Until One Photograph Revealed the Real Reason She Feared My Mother

I returned to Ohio two days later carrying copies of Mom’s letters, legal records, and the photograph album.
