stickers.

A few had my name written in my mother’s more careful handwriting, as though she had been afraid poor penmanship might somehow prevent the letter from reaching me.

They had all reached the correct house.

They simply had not reached me.

I picked up the note.

Do not give her.

No date.

No envelope dated shortly after my thirteenth birthday.

The seal had weakened with age.

Inside was a card.

Nothing dramatic.

Mom wrote that she hoped school was going well.

She had found a bookstore in Arizona that reminded her of the library we used to visit.

She enclosed twenty dollars and joked that I should spend it on something irresponsible.

The money was gone.

Someone had removed it.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

“Of afterward.

I looked at the date.

I remembered that June.

Dad and Vivian took Alyssa to Florida.

I stayed with Grandma.

Dad told me Mom had canceled evening, I cried in Grandma’s bathroom because everyone else seemed to have somewhere they preferred to be.

I kept reading.

Mom wrote that Dad said I needed more
