Then he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what he says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad paid him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you found that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad pay Thomas because you asked him to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell Dad?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Thomas would take Alyssa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was her biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad was her legal father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made it complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian\u2019s eyes flashed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once in your life, Candace, stop acting as though every decision revolved around hurting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old tone appeared so suddenly that I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>There she was.<\/p>\n<p>The woman beneath the remorse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one didn\u2019t revolve around me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned to Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else are you afraid Thomas will tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian\u2019s anger vanished.<\/p>\n<p>A long silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means there\u2019s something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked up her bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll ask him myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We left before Vivian could stop us.<\/p>\n<p>Three days later, Alyssa and I sat in a roadside restaurant near a window overlooking a gas station and a field of harvested corn.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was late.<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then ten.<\/p>\n<p>At twelve minutes, Alyssa\u2019s face closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive him time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy? He had thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>At minute fifteen, the door opened.<\/p>\n<p>An older man entered.<\/p>\n<p>Tall.<\/p>\n<p>Gray-haired.<\/p>\n<p>He looked around once.<\/p>\n<p>Then saw Alyssa.<\/p>\n<p>Everything in his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa did too.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at them both.<\/p>\n<p>There were similarities.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>Not the kind movies exaggerate.<\/p>\n<p>The shape of the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The angle of the jaw.<\/p>\n<p>The way both pressed their lips together when trying not to cry.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas approached slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlyssa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not stand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth twitched with pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence belonged to them.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas sat across from her.<\/p>\n<p>For the first several minutes, nobody touched the menus.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa asked about the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas confirmed Dad had paid him.<\/p>\n<p>He confirmed the agreement to stay away.<\/p>\n<p>He confirmed Dad later released him from it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Alyssa asked the question she had rehearsed all morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you come find me after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCowardice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems popular in this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deserve that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t agree with me to make this easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen say what you were ashamed of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He breathed in slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou regretted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day I took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was twenty-six, angry, broke, and convinced I could fix my life first and come back for you later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Later.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>The most destructive word in our family history.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa asked, \u201cDid you love Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like an evasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Then back to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved who I thought she was. She loved who she thought I might become. Neither of us was very honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa\u2019s fingers tightened around her water glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know about Candace?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I met his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He looked guilty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Vivian tell you I might not be William\u2019s daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you believe her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she said it when she was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas glanced toward Alyssa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother had a habit of turning people\u2019s vulnerabilities into weapons when she was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accuracy made the table go quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cDid you ever tell Dad that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time we met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad had known Vivian invented the rumor years before I left.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He realized what he had exposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandace\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did Dad know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Alyssa started school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>That was years earlier than Vivian admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Years.<\/p>\n<p>My voice came out flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knew Vivian was telling people I might not be his daughter when I was still living at home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>Across from me, Alyssa whispered, \u201cCandace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Everything shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s final letter admitted cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>But even that letter had omitted this.<\/p>\n<p>He had not merely failed to stop a rumor he discovered late.<\/p>\n<p>He had known.<\/p>\n<p>For years.<\/p>\n<p>Known Vivian was poisoning my place in the family.<\/p>\n<p>Known the doubts were fabricated.<\/p>\n<p>Known I was his.<\/p>\n<p>And still allowed it to continue.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say why he didn\u2019t stop her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s answer was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Vivian had promised that if he publicly exposed her lie, she would tell you the truth about your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10477\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Thomas Revealed Dad Had Hidden a Second Secret About My Mother, Forcing Me to Question Whether My Childhood Had Been Built on More Than One Lie<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not leave for Chicago.
