William\u2019s instructions require everyone named in the relevant portion of the will to be present when they are disclosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father wanted no dispute afterward about what was said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night I drove to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>The safe-deposit area was nearly empty. He asked me not to judge Alyssa until I understood the entire truth.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the sentence that made my skin turn cold.<\/p>\n<p>She did not create the lie, Candace. She was raised inside it.<\/p>\n<p>I left the bank carrying copies of the letters and feeling less certain than when I entered.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa had spent years treating me as though my existence threatened hers.<\/p>\n<p>Now Dad was asking me to consider that she, too, might have been used.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned to the house, Grandma was awake in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>She took one look at my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knew Alyssa would eventually challenge me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked older in that moment than she had at the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised William.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not make promises meaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about what he did to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled with pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cIt probably doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed Dad\u2019s letter on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat lie was Alyssa raised inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, the kitchen doorway creaked.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian stood there in her robe.<\/p>\n<p>She had heard me.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze fell to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Then to Grandma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had no right to give her that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandma rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad left it for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in her expression collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Not completely.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you lie about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should let the dead stay buried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father arranged DNA evidence before he died. He left letters predicting Alyssa would question me. He warned me she had been raised inside a lie.
