They don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Donald\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Danielle\u2019s future?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe decides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s voice trembled for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would throw away fifty years of research?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it cannot survive consent, it deserves to die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then we heard glass breaking inside.<\/p>\n<p>Officers breached.<\/p>\n<p>The confrontation lasted less than twenty seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur did not die dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>He did not escape through another tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>He did not destroy the building.<\/p>\n<p>Police found him sitting on the floor beside the open master ledger, Helen\u2019s seal in one hand and a lighter in the other.<\/p>\n<p>He had been unable to burn it.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps some part of him still believed the records were his legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he simply could not destroy the thing that had controlled his life.<\/p>\n<p>They brought him outside in handcuffs.<\/p>\n<p>Ninety-one years old.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>Bent.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stopped in front of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think this ends with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt ends with everyone learning what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel would be proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done needing dead men to approve my choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Police led him away.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin emerged carrying a sealed evidence case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Danielle file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook as I opened the copy officers allowed us to inspect.<\/p>\n<p>Projected protocol.<\/p>\n<p>No samples collected.<\/p>\n<p>No procedures performed.<\/p>\n<p>No contact authorized.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s proposed start date was four months away.<\/p>\n<p>Across the first page, handwritten in black ink, were two words.<\/p>\n<p>DO NOT PROCEED.<\/p>\n<p>The initials beneath them were R.W.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Wickham.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at them for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had poisoned me had also stopped the plan that might have reached my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Both truths existed.<\/p>\n<p>Neither erased the other.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Donald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer name is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they never started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound left him that was half sob, half exhale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, I watched technicians carry the master ledger into an evidence vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>My father had died trying to release it.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had hidden it.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had chased it.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had built his last defense around it.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, it left the repository inside a clear plastic evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>No mystery.<\/p>\n<p>No power.<\/p>\n<p>Just pages.<\/p>\n<p>The power had always come from the people who were too frightened to let anyone read them.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10428\">Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Once the Master Ledger Reached Investigators, the Conspiracy Began Collapsing, and Rachel Finally Explained Why She Chose My Tea Instead of Telling Me the Truth<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arthur wanted me alone.
