Release it yourself and you lose your last weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur breathed slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are very much Samuel\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you\u2019re still trying to make that an insult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Arthur\u2019s pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Not destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Preservation.<\/p>\n<p>He kept samples.<\/p>\n<p>Archives.<\/p>\n<p>Leverage.<\/p>\n<p>He would not burn Trial 17.<\/p>\n<p>He would move it somewhere he believed only he controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Agustin entered holding a floor plan recovered from the foundation sublevel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a cold-storage facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot on the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to an old shipping code.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter Biomedical Repository.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat closed before Madison was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz began searching the code.<\/p>\n<p>A current utility account appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The building still consumed electricity.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of it.<\/p>\n<p>Cold storage.<\/p>\n<p>Biological samples.<\/p>\n<p>Records.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly evidence collected across decades.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly Danielle\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The central question had changed.<\/p>\n<p>This was no longer about discovering what happened to my father.<\/p>\n<p>It was about ending what began before I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz assembled the team.<\/p>\n<p>Donald stayed with Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>He hated the choice.<\/p>\n<p>I insisted.<\/p>\n<p>My mother came with me because her authorization might be needed to secure the trust records.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin joined police as a cooperating witness.<\/p>\n<p>As we prepared to leave, Donald caught my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring back whatever they have on her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Madison?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t trade yourself for evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like advice this family should frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kissed him.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, police vehicles waited.<\/p>\n<p>The repository was forty minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>We had driven less than ten when Ruiz received an alert.<\/p>\n<p>The facility\u2019s power consumption had spiked.<\/p>\n<p>Then dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Backup generators activated.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin looked at the data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s moving samples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother whispered, \u201cOr destroying them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph from Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of refrigerated storage units.<\/p>\n<p>In the center stood a metal cryogenic container.<\/p>\n<p>A label was clearly visible.<\/p>\n<p>D.W. \/ M.C.
