He told me to make sure you received it when you were old enough to understand commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor stared at my hand.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled the ring free.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the band was an engraving I had always assumed was decorative.<\/p>\n<p>S.C.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Not Wickham.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s ring.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legal key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor crossed the room toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my fingers around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet Danielle go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor raised his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Then Agustin spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor turned.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin was holding the memory card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger you spent half your life looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s eyes fixed on it.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin held it above a drain in the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s attention shifted from my ring to the card.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, control slipped from his face.<\/p>\n<p>The financial evidence or the legal authority.<\/p>\n<p>Past crimes or future control.<\/p>\n<p>Donald moved almost imperceptibly toward Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel saw him.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin released the memory card.<\/p>\n<p>Victor lunged.<\/p>\n<p>The card fell.<\/p>\n<p>One of the armed men moved instinctively toward it.<\/p>\n<p>Donald ran for Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>Chaos exploded through the laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shoved Victor\u2019s arm aside.<\/p>\n<p>The pistol fired.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Donald reached her.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin tackled the nearest guard.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped behind the steel table.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer kicked the second man\u2019s knee.<\/p>\n<p>Another shot struck the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Donald lifted Danielle and ran toward the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Victor threw Rachel aside and turned toward them.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped directly into his path.<\/p>\n<p>He aimed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard sirens outside.<\/p>\n<p>Real ones this time.<\/p>\n<p>Charlene had done exactly what I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Victor heard them too.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence had escaped him.<\/p>\n<p>The police were coming.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle was almost out.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my hand.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s ring rested against my palm.<\/p>\n<p>Victor stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then a voice came from behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut the gun down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood several feet away holding the weapon one of the guards had dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands trembled violently.<\/p>\n<p>Victor smiled at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never could finish anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward the corridor where Donald had taken Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I can stop helping you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor began turning his weapon toward her.<\/p>\n<p>A gunshot cracked through the laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Victor staggered.<\/p>\n<p>The pistol fell from his hand.<\/p>\n<p>He collapsed beside the archive he had spent decades trying to possess.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel remained standing, horrified by what she had done.<\/p>\n<p>Police shouted from the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin raised his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer sank against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the drain.<\/p>\n<p>The memory card lay beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin had never actually dropped it into the opening.<\/p>\n<p>He had aimed for the edge.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger was still intact.<\/p>\n<p>So was the copied archive.<\/p>\n<p>So was my father\u2019s ring.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Victor Wickham no longer controlled what happened next.<\/p>\n<p>But as officers entered and ordered everyone to the floor, Mercer looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still don\u2019t understand the ring,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled through the blood on his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t merely give you authority to release the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officers pulled his arms behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer kept watching me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt identifies the final surviving participant in your father\u2019s trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=10419\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Mercer\u2019s Final Warning Sent Me Toward the One Person I Had Never Questioned, While Police Began Treating My Family as Evidence Instead of Victims<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elaine disconnected the computer from the network.
