this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed the parent agreement,\u201d Elaine said. \u201cThe appendix was probably inserted afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we prove that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She examined metadata.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A modification date appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The appendix had been added eleven days after Donald signed.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer needed his face?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>The stroke had supposedly caused swelling. The funeral had been brief. Rachel had insisted the casket remain partially closed.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Donald returning from Arizona pale and exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>He had never wanted to discuss it.<\/p>\n<p>The bound man laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily reunions are complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin grabbed his collar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloser than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A phone vibrated in his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine removed it.<\/p>\n<p>Incoming video call.<\/p>\n<p>No name.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin answered without showing his face.<\/p>\n<p>The screen displayed Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>She was sitting in what looked like the back of a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle was beside her.<\/p>\n<p>My entire body went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danielle looked toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped into view.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanielle, are you hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadison, listen carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police never reached the shed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>The blue lights we had seen.<\/p>\n<p>The supposed response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey weren\u2019t police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho has you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked toward someone outside the camera.<\/p>\n<p>A man spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that voice.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard its younger version on my father\u2019s recording.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Wickham.<\/p>\n<p>Donald\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>The dead man.<\/p>\n<p>He moved into view.<\/p>\n<p>Age had thinned him, but the resemblance to Donald was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>Donald whispered, \u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve made a terrible mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald gripped the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stepped into view.<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill alive, I see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisappointed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked between the brothers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are Mom and Danielle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut Danielle somewhere away from this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>His attention moved to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadison, you have something that belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s records belong to the people you hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel always enjoyed moral speeches after collecting his profits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried to expose you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried to renegotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Victor wanted me to doubt my father.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe there were truths I hadn\u2019t found yet, but Victor had already lied about his own death. I wouldn\u2019t let him define anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth archives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn exchange for Danielle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the continued safety of everyone you care about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you hurt my daughter\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve spent your whole life confusing emotion with strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Victor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring the archive to the original Wickham laboratory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat building was demolished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. The public section was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor gave us an address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Donald immediately moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a trap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is why you need to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you\u2019re reacting exactly the way Father expects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald shoved him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to lecture me about family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin shoved back.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both men stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you copy the archive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re giving Victor the originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter copying them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine connected the drives.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the SAMUEL CARTER folder while she worked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was one video file.<\/p>\n<p>The thumbnail showed my father sitting at a desk.<\/p>\n<p>The date was three days before his death.<\/p>\n<p>I clicked it.<\/p>\n<p>My father appeared on-screen.<\/p>\n<p>Older than I remembered him in photographs, tired but composed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Madison ever sees this,\u201d he began, \u201cthen I failed to keep this away from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Donald stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>My father continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one fact Victor must never learn.
