Women. Children.<\/p>\n<p>The last photograph showed a woman lying in a hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, my father had written:<\/p>\n<p>Elena Wickham \u2014 Trial 17.<\/p>\n<p>I handed it to Agustin.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever defenses he had carried vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was told she was receiving treatment for an autoimmune disorder. Fear. Blackmail. And Agustin Wickham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at Agustin.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgustin contacted me separately. He says he wants to expose the program. I don\u2019t trust him yet, but I believe he understands what they did to Elena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s voice changed as another sound entered the recording.<\/p>\n<p>A door opening.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn that thing off, Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor Wickham.<\/p>\n<p>Donald recognized his father\u2019s voice immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel, please. We can settle this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSettling it is what created this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s younger voice entered next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou participated too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invested in legitimate research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou profited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I discovered what you were doing, I stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stopped after you made enough money to become righteous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was movement.<\/p>\n<p>My father said, \u201cThe records go public tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel spoke quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about Madison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll destroy her future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I\u2019m trying to make sure she has one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s voice became colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou transferred your ownership to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s twenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can\u2019t access it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy thirty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by then she\u2019ll be old enough to recognize people like you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty.<\/p>\n<p>The year we married.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer said, \u201cYou\u2019ve made her a target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father answered, \u201cOnly if you remain criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chair scraped.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel, where is the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A heavy impact sounded.<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Donald whispered, \u201cMadison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to hear.<\/p>\n<p>My father coughed.<\/p>\n<p>Victor said, \u201cYou\u2019re making this harder than necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you give me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething to calm you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou poisoned me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt nausea rise.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase was almost identical to language Mercer had used with me in his office.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s breathing became labored.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard, what did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor said, \u201cWhere is the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father laughed weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll never find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another crash.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel\u2019s voice, closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel, tell me where it is. I arrived later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel was unconscious. Mercer was gone. Rachel was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStanding over him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father was alive when I arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Victor was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you call an ambulance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have saved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn\u2019t try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald moved between us again.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin\u2019s voice cracked for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have lived with that every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to hate him cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about this family permitted clean hatred.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTouching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recorded all of this too, didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you\u2019ve just recorded yourself admitting knowledge of the trials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou assume anyone will recover the recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A mechanical sound began behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine spun toward the ventilation grate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin smelled the air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald grabbed the case.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the first sting in my throat.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s voice remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave the archive, and I\u2019ll open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadison, your daughter needs a mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have thought of that before poisoning me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was Rachel\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing your compound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I took that as confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Donald began searching the walls.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin pulled the ventilation grille loose.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a narrow duct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo small.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine pointed upward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaintenance access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A metal panel sat near the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Donald dragged the chair beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>He climbed, pushed against the panel and found resistance.<\/p>\n<p>The gas grew stronger.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes watered.<\/p>\n<p>Donald kicked upward.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>The panel broke loose.<\/p>\n<p>Cold air rushed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She climbed.<\/p>\n<p>I handed her the archive case.<\/p>\n<p>Agustin followed.<\/p>\n<p>Donald lifted me.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled myself into the narrow access space.<\/p>\n<p>Below us, Mercer\u2019s voice continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t outrun what\u2019s on those drives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald climbed last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d I shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer answered through the room beneath us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your husband why his signature appears on the most recent authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speaker crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago, Donald Wickham authorized continuation of the Madison Carter protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s voice followed us through the duct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed it, Donald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou simply didn\u2019t know what you were signing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>A memory had surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago Mom brought business papers to my office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Dad\u2019s old holding company needed restructuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agustin stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gas rose beneath us.<\/p>\n<p>I crawled forward.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Donald whispered the sentence that changed the shape of the betrayal again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy signature
